Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

I don't tweet but I understand there are some who do. Did you know the little yellow bird's name is Larry? As in Larry Bird.

We went to the the newly opened and greatly anticipated Tookies Seafood for our anniversary last week. Have you been yet? You know you want to. We asked to be seated in the Treehouse. A bit warm for when we were there and a tad and a half too noisy for both of us but a great view of 146 traffic. At our waiters suggestion, we had the beachballs. One more name for a stuffed, fried jalapeno. Midway through my second beachball I had to ask MJ what they were stuffed with. She said crab and other stuff. Lord knows I don't argue with shewhomustbeobeyed so I took her word for it because you couldn't prove it by me. I will attest to the delightful but not overpowering flavor of the jap. I ordered the blackened catfish Pontchartrain. The fish itself was very good. You have to work at it to mess up a Tennessee Tarpon but the rest, well, hmph. The grilled veggies looked great. Hell everything was camera ready, someone just forgot to add flavor. I asked my lovely wife about hers. She ordered Shrimp Alfredo but was waved off and went for the Shrimp Scampi instead. The best she had to offer was a limp wristed wave of her fork and a rather non committal shrug. They are still new and we will be back we'll just try something else. BTW, the Glenlivet was spectacular.

OK on to fix the plumbing problems with our camper. Seems when we turned on the campsite water the pressure was enough to disconnect everything inside our chariot. What a mess. Then we'll look into the whole bumper issue.

Speaking of anniversaries the new 50th Anniversary T shirts and other stuff are in. Some will be available at the meeting this Thursday and orders are being taken in a lot of different ways. Check you Islander. Here's a peek. And a HUGE Thank You to Teresa Otten for all her hard work to get this done.

And it's National Trail Mix Day. Me yawning.

Camping in the rain

Is OK but that's all. Just OK. All the clouds did provide some very welcome shade though.
If you've never been to Village Creek State park it is very much worth the drive. It's just a couple of miles north of Beaumont on US 69. That makes it less than a two hour drive from our little slice of paradise. The camp was almost empty until we got there. We all got sites next to each other and that was nice and cozy. When I say cozy I mean less than 20 feet from the next camp. Since we have all been camping together for over 10 years and haven't killed each other it's OK. If someone else were that close to my camp site it would be awkward. Potentially very awkward. The sites we were in were very shaded which made it easier on our little AC units. The park was very clean and most importantly the restrooms we practically unused. Except by us. I do not recall one complaint from any of our significant others. A short hike to the creek prior to our departure was the perfect ending to a good camp. Official creek access was closed due to recent flooding but we managed to get close enough for a good look. Great swimming and one of our troop was already planning a paddle trip. River Otters and Beaver in the area but they assure us no gators. Water's too cool they say. All in all, We'll be back. It's just too close not to. Can't wait for the itching to stop. Entertainment was provided by our very own Master of Ceremony, B Hoerner. And I do mean Master.
Who do you know that can convince a group of adults to wrap each other in toilet paper in 90+. Extra pints if you can identify any of the "mummies"

Then it was dinner time. Did I mention we don't do hot dogs...

Tood, is it your turn to pick?
RAT (raggedy ass trailers)Pack. Redefining trailer trash one camp site at a time.

A shout out to C Kaepernick. Pretty sure you just singlehandedly redefined moron.

It might be

National Dog Day today but Sunday is National Go Topless Day! REPRESENT Clear lake Shores!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the Clear Lake Shores Civic Club!!
It turned 50 yesterday. You'd think there'd been a celebration..

I know some of CLS Finest drop in on this blog from time to time so here's one for them. What course of action would you like to see a Citizen take if they observed someone not obeying the "pick up after you @#$% dog rule"? Anon is turned on.

99L is weakening a bit but that just means it has  better chance of making it in to the gulf. All of the models indicate the new projected course. Next weekend could be interesting. A Labor day Storm...

Camping in the rain.  Hold down the fort neighbors.

Thursday, August 25, 2016

has a good chance of getting a name today. Hermine. Male? Female? Both? It only has a 50/50 chance of making it to the gulf. Welcome to peak hurricane season. And we’re almost halfway through.
It’s also National Banana Split day. I guess I coulda lead with that.

This is to all of my neighbors who let their dogs run loose.

And let them crap in my yard. Not by the street, I pretty much let that slide even though it's against the law. but up in my yard? And still don’t clean it up. know this you inconsiderate son of a bitch. It will cost you the better part of $300 to have Dr. Trent dig the pellet out of it’s ass if I catch it. Problem? Come and see me. Most important, understand this, I'm not pissed at your dog. It's just a dog. Mine died a month ago And I'm getting used to not having to watch where I walk and then you let this happen.  Asshat.

Happy Anniversary MJ!

Here’s to the next 22 years! Oh, and since we are between Platinum and Silver I’ll just hold on till Silver. But how to best celebrate the day you gave up on finding someone better than me? Sounds like taco tuesday.

Star Wars was released closer to the end of World War II than to today. I took everyone I knew to see it at the Twelve Oaks Cinema. My apartment was across the freeway inside of Wesleyan. There was no Summit and at that time there was no Greenway anything. It was a giant park with gorgeous trees. 😕

Anyone have an original Mosquito Magnet? I have a couple of boxes of the compressed air cartridges used for cleaning and two different adapts that are looking for a new home. Yours for the asking. While those were excellent bug machines, when it came time to replace ours I started shopping around cuz those babies ain’t cheap. I ended up with a DynaTrap. No propane which cuts the monthly cost by half and no attractants, which further reduces the cost. It has been hard at it for two years now and has never been turned off. If you’re not from here you may not know that we have mosquitos year round. I like it. No fuss no mess no propane and no mosquitos.

It's shaping up to be a camping weekend. Village Creek State Park here I come. Stay tuned for report.

Oh, It's National Spongecake Day too.

Happy Friday Aaaand it's

National Soft Ice Cream DAY!!!! DQ here I come.

Some great news out of the City Council meeting last night. Permits have been applied for from Popeye's and a donut shop for new builds in the Home Depot parking lot!! WOOT!! Come on Popeyes !! And having grown up on Shipley's I can only hope and pray they don't put one that close to my mouth. But....

Also found out about the two crazy lots on E Shore at Rosewood. From what I understand the first one had petitioned Council to buy some of the street right of way to fit their building plans and when they got in went the for sale sign. I call bullshit. It seems like that's what was on the agenda for the other lot last night. That is bullshit. It's simple, build a smaller house. Period. This is not a new conversation.

Have a great weekend neighbors, me, I'm taking my wallet to the boat doctor.

But I missed National Rum day yesterday. Today is only National Thrift Shop Day. Not even close.

Reading The Telegraph this morning. in the travel section they had a title World's least friendly cities. Guess how many we had. 4 out of 10. Yep 40%. New Jersey had two. Worst on the list was Newark. Having been there it's no huge surprise. Atlantic City was number 5. Oakland Ca, was number three. Guess who sat between Lagos, Nigeria and Maputo, Mozambique? Detroit. Oh well.
Another 2 1/2 inches in my rain gauge and it looks like we have a little more coming. I'll take it. I'm kinda liking the no 90 temps.

National Relaxation Day!

What a great day after National Filet Mignon Day!!

I don't know about y'all but today's high of 82 is a damn sight better than those 98's we had last week. And I think the rain got here just in time for my lawn. All my rain barrels were getting low too. As of this typing I got just shy of 4" on the deck.
So we're sitting around Saturday morning when I get this text message from my pal Todd. "Allan, Bryan, Y'all interested in dinner at our house tonight at 7. Deal is that we bring each of you a whole duck by noon. Everybody cooks their duck then sows up at 7."
WTH. I've had duck once. In '78 I think. That is the extent of my duck repertoire. Was. Step one was obviously what to do with this.
As it turns out there is a market for Anatidae extremities. As I understand it when prepared correctly they are considered delicacies. I personally balk at the word delicacy. I think its code for shit i would not normally or willingly put in my mouth. Maybe thats just me.
After a light dusting with my favorite rub, Scooter Spice, and a loving rub  down with a fresh Orange in to my second favorite cooking device the Big Easy, About 90 minutes later we got this.
Not too bad if I do say so myself. But considering the company I keep I'm OK with it.

Here is the house presentation which I really liked. Who knew duck tasted so good?
Little brother Jim, Who I consider to be one of the best cooks I have ever met brought this Asian style with grilled dates.
Final entry was unique in itself. How many out there even own a real Dutch Oven? Let alone use it. Brother Bryan has this down.
Drooling on your keyboard yet? Liar, liar pants on fire.

And yes. We called it a Duck-Off.

Made biscuits this morning. Found this in my bag of Grands.
Cooked it anyway.
Have a great week.

Happy Friday Clear Lake Shores!

Here's to my Little Sister and to Philip Adams. Because it’s National Middle ChildDay that’s why and they are the only middle children I can think of.

It’s official, I’ve given up on Hemingway. He makes my brain hurt. I found a “new” Michener book at the free library at City Hall. I do like Michener, I’ve read several of his books and never been disappointed. And he’s a Texas boy. He may have been born in PA but his ashes will be in Texas forever. Now that’s commitment.

Anyone have a good recipe for homemade weed killer? I found the vinegar, salt and soap one but it doesn't work for shit. I even up'ed th salt ration a little because I'm using it on the driveway but it doesn't last two weeks. Not much of a weed killer if you ask me. Moving on.

I’ve been watching that big ol’ rain cloud to our east hoping some of it would drift this direction. Looks like we might get lucky. I’m ready to stop sweating like  Clinton at a polygraph. I keep telling myself in 8 weeks it’ll all be over. That’s about when 90 will feel good.

Have a great weekend y'all!

It's National Lazy Day

and that works for me. Any reviews or insights on Village Creek State Park? Wan One? Stay tuned. I really hope TPWD gets a better report than the folks at the DPS. 90 days is/was the norm for processing a CHL. Due to the overwhelming amount of requests they placed a 180 limit and hired some extra bodies. Well here we are at 210+ days and I haven't heard a peep. I wonder what the hold up is. I'd like to find out but in typical government fashion they have all communication lines dealing with the topic locked in a loop. Perfect.

Went to the EDC meeting last night. Sounds like Frank's deal is off the rails. Again. There was a nice fella there from the League City Chamber of Commerce asking our fair city to join. He put up a solid sales pitch so we did. Town Center is moving along albeit slowly. I guess it's still progress.

I should have posted his with one of the other tree pics.

It's still 97 degrees

Damn it's Hot.
Here's a shot of Palo Duro Canyon. This is not only where we started our road trip this is where I'll end it.

On to the Cadillac Ranch

Time to plan a camping trip and test the new A/C unit.

It's always someone else's fault...

Funniest headline of the day/week/month..

Clinton acknowledges trust issues, blames them on GOP

damn that vast right wing conspiracy...again.

This is exactly why "We The People" need to fire every one of them and start over.

National Oyster Day

Did you know there are over 100 different species of oysters?  They’re typically named after the body of water in which they’re grown because oysters take on the characteristics of the water in which they live. Here are some other interesting oyster facts:
The largest oyster-producing body of water in the world is located in Chesapeake Bay on the east coast of the U.S.
Almost two billion pounds of oysters are eaten each year.In the U.S., east coast oysters tend to be smaller, milder and saltier. West coast oysters are creamy and sweet.
Only one out of every 10,000 oysters will produce a pearl.
I don't know about you but I feel a tad slighted that our very own Gulf of Mexico wasn't even mentioned!

Ending out time in California on the Redwood Highway. Hwy 101 drives through these monster trees.

On to the Oregon coast. This was nothing short of breathtaking. Lunch at Yachats. Inside seats about three, the rest of us are outside in a tent. A heated tent. Notice the heaters? They were all on. Great food.
Up the road from the Sealion caves. I told Mel that we need to come back here in the summertime......

See Januarys' post about Post. This was moments before the tornado alarm went off. Notice there is no view past the wall that is about 390 feet away. There was a reason for that. Never again. Bad juju.

Happy Friday Clear Lake Shores!!

It's National Grab Some Nuts Day. Meanwhile, back at the ranch.....
No rain the next day.
Looking north. Best pic I've ever taken.
Looking for the giant Sequoias
Found this one but its only an average Sequoia at 257' tall.
Found this set of twins too.

Then we found this bad boy. This is the General Sherman and the reason for our epic road trip. Wyatt decided he wanted to see soe big trees. the General Sherman is the largest of them all at 274 feet tall, 102 feet around with a 32 foot diameter. Bravo Zulu Mother Nature.
After a foggy night on Fisherman's Wharf, DI you know they close down at 9? we head north in this.
Yes it is the Golden Gate
Bodega Bay. It's where Hitchcock's "The Birds" was filmed. We ate in the car.
Onwards to Eureka. That's Charlie the seal poking his head up and checking out the boardwalk.

Tomorrow is the Redwood Highway. More awesomeness and Oregon.
Last night's city Council was interesting. Short except for the budget part off it. We are looking at hiring two more officers and exploring options for our marine enforcement.
