Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

A personal fave

It’s National Candy Corn Day!

This is for all you Joggers, Runners, Walkers, Bikers, Skaters and enquiring minds in general from Neighbor Dave.
The Clear Lake Shores Shore Drive is 1.739 miles around. This was measured by a Surveyor’s wheel. That contraption looks like a small bicycle wheel with a handle and a counter. The wheel is designed to be 4.0 feet in circumference, and it has four equally spaced nubs on the wheel wall that clicks the counter one number every time a nub strikes it. I walked this wheel around the island staying about one foot from the outside edge. For my convenience, I started at the north edge of my driveway. There are now dayglo orange marks every quarter of a mile going clockwise. The counter was reset to zero every quarter of a mile, but the total back to my starting place was 9,184 feet. That is probably one foot longer than actual because I had to dodge two trucks parked on that side of the road. From those data I calculated that the outside edge of Shore Drive is 9190 feet (1.740 miles), and the inside edge is 9090 feet (1.722 miles). (Shore Drive is 17 feet across at my house.) People that walk, jog, run, bike or skate around the island may want to know that information. Dave Petkus 10/24/14

Just in case you didn’t know where all the flags come from this is from the Boy Scouts.

 We have had many requests for an online renewal system and have it up and running from our website.

More from your Civic Club;
Get your goblins ready for a spooktacular good time at the Civic Club Kids Halloween Party October 31, 4:00 to 6:00 at the club house.
A big THANK YOU to volunteer chair AMY HOPSON and SARAH BREEN for stepping forward to make this happen.
Phil Currell will offer Yoga classes at the Club House every Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 EXCEPT the first Thursday of every month, which is  Civic Club Meeting night
Classes are free.  Phil believes practicing yoga can increase your range of motion and mobility, develop breath awareness and stamina, improve your focus and balance, increase joint stability and reduce likelihood of injury.  All ages can benefit. Come on out and give it a try.

From Neighbor Amanda;
Good morning Clear Lake Shores friends and neighbors! Last year y'all came through in an amazing way for our troops overseas. I collected a whole pick up truck load full of stuff that was packed up and shipped overseas to our brave men and women fighting for our freedom. THANK YOU! Now, some closer to home need our help. The American Legion Post 521 has asked for some items, and I'm hoping you all will help me. They need the following:
  • snacks (store bought, please), such as individual packs of chips and cookies, candy (leftover Halloween candy, anyone?!), fresh fruit, and sodas
  • twin bed sheets, pillows, towel sets, and laundry detergent
If you can help with any of these items, please let me know. You can drop them off at my house (506 E. Shore Dr.), or email me and I will come to you to pick them up. If you would rather donate cash, I will gladly accept that and go purchase items.
Thank you!

Thanks, Dave for the accurate measurements of the perimeter of the Island!

Ok Dave, this is great. How much does it add if you take the actual track that goes around the outside southern perimeter of Jarbo Bayou Park? I always take that trail when I walk. It amazes me that no one actually walks on this trail but instead stay on Birch.
