Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

In like a lion....

A quick note from neighbor Paul Kennedy says he is recuperating nicely and finally back at home on the island. Welcome home Paul.
Just heard from our second place Jerky contender, “My world famous second place store bought entry came from Woody’s Smokehouse in Centerville.  It’s hard to miss on the side of IH-45 if you’re heading to Dallas.  If you have trouble finding a reason to get that far off the island, they have an online store where you can get just about long as you’re not looking to buy 1st place jerky that is  Thanks Rob!
Bunny update….Amos, this looks like one of those good news, bad news stories you here about. The bad news is the folks on Pine had only offered temporary housing. The good news is Jim says they’re pretty good with a light sauce.
New Rule: Just because your tattoo has Chinese characters in it doesn't make you spiritual. It's right above the crack of your ass. And it translates to "beef with broccoli." The last time you did anything spiritual, you were praying to God you weren't pregnant. You're not spiritual. You're just high.

Happy Birthday to Eric Clapton. Huge fan here.

Happy Days are here again! The best damn burger in Galveston county is back! Joe Lee’s Seafood Kitchen is finally set up to crank out the world famous South Shore Beer Garden’s mouth watering burgers and such. Dang! I can not WAIT to get mine…..oooooohhhh and the Philly?! YUM! You can get the whole scoop at Welcome back bacon, mushroom & Swiss, we missed you.

Bunny update….Some folks on Pine, next to the Wessels’, are interested in adopting the abandoned black and white rabbit. I have an APB out on them and if no one speaks up I’m hooking them up with Amos for the hand off. Speak now or forever hold your pellets.

A couple of articles in local papers are letting everyone know that it’s spring time and that means hibernation is over for a our slithering neighbors. Proof in the pudding was the 5 foot alligator trying to get under the bridge Saturday. He was very shy and kept backing up as more folks stopped to get a pic. I got a crappy one but what the hell I don’t have a camera just a crappy phone. Karen Russell may have snapped a better shot, I think she had a real camera. Good enough for the Islander Karen? Back to the story, keep a weather eye out for snakes. You know they are there. Ian brought one over to Wyatt just last week while he was refurbing his flower beds. This one was just a little grass snake but his bigger nastier cousins are out there. Pay attention to your wood piles when you’re ready to fire up the smoker….

What's the difference between a southern zoo and a northern zoo?
A northern zoo has a description of the animal on the cage...  A southern
zoo includes a recipe.

The last Tuesday for March

Lowell Brown left the island for the last time yesterday. We lost a friend and neighbor and we will be poorer for it. Vaya con Dios friend.
What has become known as The Bunny Caper of 2011 and seventeen emails later I think the bunny is holed up at the Rolen residence. Seems they have an extra hutch for bunny sleepovers and our wayward rodent is hanging there waiting for a ride home.Amos says he's good for now but he really needs to hop his butt outta here....

Animal Day

Happy Monday, Break’s over, on your head. Today it’s all about our not quite human friends.
James Adams the younger donated to the Sea Turtle Conservancy and adopted a turtle. He named it Captain Okie on behalf of the Clear Lake Shores kids. For our off Island readers Capt Okies was our local Beverage, pronounced liquor, store. They had been at the entrance to the Island since 1964. Old friends indeed. Hurricane Ike dealt them a fatal blow in ’08 and despite some sincere efforts we had to let them go. They are missed daily. Not just the products but the families and folks who ran the place since I’ve been hangin’ out here in ’84. Ray and Helen, Brenda and Billie, Cynthia and Lloyd and don’t forget Pam. James, that was way past cool! I wish I was smart enough to get the PDF up here but .........
Then there’s the bunnie that was discovered in the area of Clear Lake Road and Ivy. Cute little fella. Go check your bunnie, if he’s not where you left him go see Lezlie and or Tony Smith on CLR. She volunteered several years ago to be our Island Pet Liaison and she is keeping your rabbit safe. He’s ready to come home now.
And there’s always a dog story not too far from the keyboard.  Tim and Julie’s friends are moving into a place that does not allow dogs and they have a beautiful 6 year old yellow lab named Stonewall and he needs a good home. That’s it for now.

And a Happy birthday to the “Manly Deeds, Womanly Words” state, Maryland. I did not make that up. I like Mary Land. Used to live there. Its 377 years old, and anyone that has ever been to Annapolis has to love it. Oyster shooters at Middletons? Damn good stuff!
HEADS UP… (not sure what they have against weed eaters……)
League City Holds E-Waste and Shredding Event

The City of League City is continuing its Lean.Clean.Green. Initiative with a document shredding and e-waste event for the residents and businesses of League City. “Technology changes rapidly and people are always upgrading their gadgets.  This event is a way to ensure that those items don’t end up in a landfill,” said Mike Tubbs, Manager of the League City Recycling Center. The event will be held Saturday, March 26th 2011, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at 1535 Dickinson Ave directly behind the League City Recycling Center.

The event is open to all League City residents and businesses.  However, the City asks that businesses limit the number of e-waste items. There is no limit on document shredding for businesses or residents.
