I am on the verge of wrapping up the delightful task of scanning in our old Islanders. A tad under 400 issues. We are skipping around filling in a few blank spots in years and or months. Now comes the hard part. Mary the Magician has to arrange for (a lot) more storage space, then make them presentable to you. She can handle it no doubt but that pesky work thing keeps slowing her down so don’t get antsy. It’ll happen.
I started off with the November 2001 issue. It has a great piece from Doris Sanders, you’ll remember her as The Duck Lady. She had been here since 1929. A few years back the Club buried a time capsule under the Club House and I'm pretty sure there is a high school picture of Doris in the lake, in front of their house, with Islands behind her. Pretty sure. I'll just have to hang around another 39 years to see, I had read a few stories about a beer joint on the Island but I just couldn’t place it. Her article leads me to believe it was where the law office is now next to the Club House. Who knew?
In other news the police department got two new Ski Do jet skis and a new motor for the police boat. Thanks EDC.
On to 2003 and the beginning of one of my favorites, ManCakes. Hard to believe next year will make 15 years. We'll have to come up with something a little special. Maybe bring back the original $2 price tag? Not happening. Then hurricane Claudette raised the tides. A few tips on how to help your lawn after it goes under water, salt water that is, and a reminder to get your CLS stickers on your vehicles so the PD will let you back on the Island afterward. It keeps the gawkers out. You will appreciate that when the time comes.
We got the popcorn machine and what was "mislabeled" as a sno cone machine. It's just a margarita machine in disguise. Drainage was a huge issue in 03 and that year was when they rebuilt Clear Lake Road. Remember how much fun that was? On to 2005.
