Aaaand you can set your alarm for the predawn hours of Saturday May 6, go outside, and catch the Eta Aquarid meteor shower—one of two annual showers caused by the collision of the Earth and the debris field of Halley’s comet. It’s not the most spectacular shower of the year, but as it peaks tomorrow morning, you can count on it to deliver a ghostly streak of light every few minutes.
Kind of a cool way to take a casket to the cemetery
A funeral procession pulled into Pressley Cemetery near Cross, South Carolina. Several car loads of family members followed a black truck towing a boat with a coffin in it.
A passer-by remarked,
"That guy must have been a very avid fisherman."
"Oh, he still is," remarked one of the mourners.
"As a matter of fact, he's headed off to the lake as soon as we bury his wife."
Mary and I have been bustin' some serious hump the past several days to bring you all the old Islanders. She is uploading the scanned files and to make it easier and certainly more interesting she is grouping them by the decade. So when you go to the Clubs web site, I have a link over there →→→→→→
and then hover over the Islander tab they'll drop down. I hope you enjoy them. And next time you see Mary out n the street tell her thanks!!
Here's some more goodies from the past.
The Club held several Pancake breakfasts. What a good idea! All proceeds went to buy playground equipment for the new Grove Street Park. Charge was $2.50 a plate. We are definitely raising the prices next Mancakes. I saw an ad for the Shore Lounge? Anyone? There was a $100 reward for a lost cat. Must have been some cat. They started awarding a Neighbor of the Month. The first one was Juanita Vannerson. You go girl. New water mains and fire hydrants were installed in 88. Had everyones' attention because water was getting cut off at random and without warning. Zero Friends made. The Island used to get hip deep in the annual Blessing of the Fleet. I wonder when that stopped. There was no Islander for 5 months in 89 due to the editors eye surgery. The first copy of the By-Laws are in the October 88 issue along with a yummy recipe for Creole Cabbage. The best line so far was the editor asking forgiveness for a faulty ribbon on her typewriter. Explain that one to your kids!
The fruit of my loins is out of town for the weekend. He was invited to attend Gladiator Camp in Garland courtesy of TaeKwando.
Happy Friday Clear Lake Shores! I'm outta here.
