IslandDrumz

Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

It's National Pool Opening Day

But not for us. Did you know our pool doesn't close for winter? Yep. If you're that person knock your lights outs. Speaking of pools, The Civic Club will host the annual Ice Cream Social at the pool on the next meeting date aka next Thursday. Bring your checkbook and you can renew your membership and have some Blue Bell. With or without sprinkles.

Breakfast. And yes, that boudin is from Best Stop. 1 egg and a sleeve of Ritz later we have yummy goodness and biscuits.

I made it through most of 1992s Islander. Did you know there was a conversation in early '92 to change the name of our fair  city to something that had the word Island in it? Yep. I also learned that out very own club house will celebrate a huge birthday in October. Guess. I'll tell you next week. I also read how Deep Hole got it's name and that the soup cook-off started in 1991.
I sent off a photo to a few of the old timers to identify some faces at a meeting when Golf Carts were first OK'd for use.

Does anyone have a need or use for an old sail? I have one but I'm not sure where it came from. Bryan has two, One Mylar that needs some TLC and one damn big cruising spinnaker. Want it? I'll make you a brother in law deal.

Dumbest shit I read today? Yale students going on a hunger strike. Until they get hungry. WTF?

National Superhero Day?

Who's yours? Your Mom or your Dad? Tough choice.

I'm up to April 1992 in scanning our old Islanders. There is too much good stuff here to miss. I hope most of you had the opportunity to meet some of our "older" treasures here on the Island. I use that term less and less. I'm pretty sure I met Sue Davis many years back but I could be wrong. I hope I did and I really hope she gets a lot of thanks for all She and Joe did here. If you're lucky you've met Buzz and you have got to check out some of Buzz 'stories. There are stories about local Pirates both at sea and on land. Pay attention and you can find the story of Dr. Joe and his Pink Caddy. I love it Joe. I don't think I had the pleasure of meeting Virginia Bolin but she's another story teller. Jean Garst is another. Her and Larry still live here. It's folks like them that made this the place you wanted to live. They were active in the Club, contributed regularly to the Islander and most importantly got involved in politics. That's what makes it folks.

If you have a few minuted to kill check out this youtube video sent to me by neighbor Grant. Can you identify anything? I'd love to hear it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NciY_Q33W8o
It's 1984. Thats the year I moved to Legend Point. Joe Lee was the Mayor. I used to come over for Council meetings just to find out what was going on. What a HOOT!

OK, Breaks over. Back on my head.

Oh It's National Blueberry Pie day too. That was my favorite until that unfortunate event in the ships bakery. But that's another story.

National Pretzel Day

That works for me. Name your favorite, Rold Gold (Mini twists for me) or Snyders? Or those artery busters at the mall...wrapped around a Nathan's hot dog. This is me slobbering.

We hit the jackpot a few days ago. Loooong time resident, neighbor, civic activist, and club contributor Sue Davis kept a trove of old Islanders. Her Granddaughter Lindsey Thomas who lives at Sues old place found them and asked Sue if she could give them to the Civic Club. Naturally Sue said yes. I've been scanning them in foir the past few days. I have sent some '85, '89, most of '90 on to the web gurus, to get them loaded on to the Clubs web site. There is a link over there →
If my scanner/printer holds out I expect to be done by early May. There is soooo much cool stuff in these old files. You think we had some stinky business a  few years back? It ain't new. Some of the conversations we are having today were had 20 plus years ago. Some of the names have changed but not all! I have even scanned in the old ads. It's interesting to notice the prices. My favorite story is from late 90early 91 about all these new folks moving in and wanting to change things. HA! The more things change eh? Who remembers Betos? Fat Al's? Gracies? Now it's Skippers. I go back to Betos. If you get a chance give 'em a read, I think you'll find them entertaining.
They have free Dunks at the Office. 4 per person. Get 'em and use 'em. Not sure what a dunk is? You put it in standing water and it kills mosquito larvae. Tis the season. I put 'em in my rain barrels.

Next week is the Civic Clubs Ice Cream Social. It's at the pool and they will be selling pool memberships so bring your checkbook. The Ice Cream is free to members.

Just caught myself yelling at the TV. Some stupid reporter was asking how the Prez is going to stop rich folks from taking advantage of the new tax code. I want someone to tell the dumbass that rich folks didn't make the tax code. The swamp dwellers in office did. Sheesh.

National DNA Day

Santa brought me the DNA test kit a few years back. It was very interesting. I was looking for my Grandmothers American Indian influence and got 66% Great Britain, no big surprise there since I can track my family back to 1650 in England, 9% Iberian Peninsula, 8% Ireland, 8 % Western European and 6% Scandinavian. We were told that Granny was Choctaw. I swear. Imagine that.

Today is a sad day. The end of an era. I guess technically Ike was the end but this is certainly the last nail. It was The Island Bar and Grill when I first moved to Clear Lake Shores. Many a late night breakfasts were had there.

Waaaa.

Time to fire up the grill. I feel the need for shrimp after seeing Greg's Facebook post.

NATIONAL TAKE A CHANCE DAY

Every year on April 23rd National Take a Chance Day encourages us to break out of our comfort zone.

Most of us have unaccomplished goals or dreams. What if this was the day to take the chance to make them happen? Even if it is just the first step toward that goal, it will be one step closer than before. And straight from the Toyota commercial to you...
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowline, sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. " Mark Twain
Uncertain where to start? Polish up that resume’, sign up for a foreign language class, or buy a pair hiking shoes. Those are all first steps to taking chances on new jobs, traveling to a foreign country, or hiking that trail. Ringin' any belles Tess?

What a difference 24 hours can make...

I just read the daily diatribe on Facebook. Short version is "... It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter, I don't know and I'll paraphrase here but it sounds a lot like and I'm smarter than the 40 plus people that have been working on this project for the last 6 years. I really hope that someone has notified Bernie via Facebook. If you were following this blog back in 2010 then you know he is laughing his ass off. And what's with spooking the neighbors? That's a Fuller move if ever there was one. Did you ask her how she feels about the proposed Motel 6 like strip center Keman has planned? It's a damn site closer to her door than Okies. Oh, never mind. It's the cities  COMMERCIAL ZONE. I need an aspirin.

Day three sleeping on the Purple. 👏👍👍. The only downside, and it's a reluctant  downside is all the plastic waste. I have no doubt they'll fix this in the future. Enjoy the cool snap, it's back to the 80's Monday.

Today is a couple of things,

National Earth Day is observed each year on April 22.
It's held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Every year around the world, Earth Day organizers promote green campaigns to save the Earth.
The concept of Earth Day was established in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco. On March 21, 1970, a sanctioned Proclamation was signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. On April 22, 1970, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day. National Earth Day is not considered a national holiday but old hippies around the globe are gonna party anyhow.
Remember to RECYCLE !

Maybe not on the same scale but damn sure closer to home. For two days in a row out of the past 8 years, I did not wake up with a sore back. We went Purple. Not even sure how or when I came across the Internet ad but I am glad I did. It's a "new" or at least different concept in the mattress world. It looks like this
And acts like this.

The way I see it I'll break even just in the cost of Excedrin about next March. This is not so much an ad spot as a sincere endorsement. If you want to know more look 'em up here:
https://onpurple.com/mattress/science-b

Did someone claim this lil guy? He was found wandering around behind Stewart.

And here's a HEADSUP. Over on the right hand side there is a new link. Granted Gardens. Fairly new folks on the Island, They live on Grove. She is the New Civic Club Veep and if you peeked into the kitchen at ManCakes you saw Steve working his butt off. Check 'em out please.

It's National Garlic Day!

If you love garlic raise your hand. Me too. My third favorite spice.

This stinking rose is a member of the lily family. This family also includes onions, leeks and shallots. While garlic originated in Asia over 7,000 years ago, it is used in a variety of cuisines, but it is also used for medicinal purposes.
It is considered an herbal remedy for colds, and it has been suggested to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. Modern science has proven garlic’s antibiotic properties.

Myth and superstition reek of garlic. The most familiar one is garlic wards off vampires. You'd think it would apply somewhat to mosquitos too but no. Folklore tells us garlic grew from satan’s left footprint when he left the Garden of Eden;
To dream about garlic in the house is supposed to mean good luck and if the dream includes eating garlic there might be hidden secrets. There are over 300 varieties of garlic in the world to dream about as well!
Gilroy, California is known as the Garlic Capital of the World. Will Rogers was once quoted as saying it is “…the only place in America where you can marinate a steak just by hanging it out on a clothes line.”

Sooooo, who makes the call between a "hate" crime or an act of terrorism? I can't help but wonder what criteria they use. I guess it could be considered a retirement plan because it was in California. Come on big one.

Too much bullshit in Facebook land. This is me taking a break. Not sure what my pal and our neighbor is looking for. Has anyone asked him what he wants? He's gotta want something. I would but I'm just not that interested.

Good attendance at last nights Council meeting. Here's what I took away from it.
WCID talked up the upcoming bond election. It's a good thing. The election is on May 5th and you can vote at the fire station. May 4th is the Ice Cream Social and pool membership signup. 6:30 at the pool. Johnathon Boultinghouse was appointed to the EDC. Congrats Johnathon and thanks for stepping up. They are looking at doing the custom brick sale again. I'm in for three bricks. If you are interested get hold of a pool person. The ordinance estblishing a standards base for hotels was voted down but the other two were passed. No, Craig was not there.

National Animal Crackers Day

Just in case you were wondering it was Swai. You can read all about them all over the interwebs. Like anything and everything there is good and bad press but that's our modern life and you get to make the call. Me and Momma liked it and odds are I'll get more this week and see how it works on a grill. 38 lbs of it was fried up just for our Easter enjoyment. That went with 20 pounds of Fries/Tater-tots and 8 lbs. of yummy hush puppies. And don't forget the 5 pounds of Chicken nuggets for the little ones.

Still waiting for Elevation Express to provide our "new" elevation certificate. They were supposed to be here last week...

When relocating Chloe last week we discovered these little jewels.
Yep. Termites. When you live in a wooden house you need to know these things. Got a recommendation from a neighbor for Enviro-Pest. They are local so I gave them a call. Will brought his own shovel. He crawled all over my house and the good news is there were no signs of activity on the house. He gave me a to do list and pointed out some issues I was totally unaware of. Good job. He definitely gets my recommendation, so if you are in need give 'em a buzz. They remove uninvited varmints too.
http://www.enviro-pestmanagement.com/

So according to CNN this assclown is
"Maxine Waters is having a moment"
Waters: Can I help you? What do you want?
Reporter: Can you tell us anything about the discussion?
Waters: No, it's classified. And we can't tell you anything. All I can tell you is the FBI director has no credibility.

National Cheeseball Day.

Hope everyone had as great an Easter celebration as you wanted. I know we did here on our little slice of paradise. Kudos to the Civic Clubs new slate of officers and their first event out of the chute. Some 700 stuffed Eater Eggs were scattered all over Jarboe Park

by some local teens and they chaperoned the little one in the search for colorful goodies.
The Fish fry was excellent and was pulled off by Team Caldwell despite fighting a still easterly wind. If you've ever cooked outside you know what a pain that can be.
If you've ever cooked outside in a steady 515 + knot wind you can appreciate the challenges! Job well done folks! It was a great turnout and I heard nothing but compliments all round. Lets do it again next week!

This goes under dumbest shit I read today. This moron is calling for Trumps impeachment. Pretty sure this is why the Dems lost. This is their voice.

And for those liberals who decry harsh conservative attacks on President Obama, let’s hearken back to 2005 and listen to Waters’ comments on President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney:   “The President is a liar.   Dick Cheney, the chief architect of the Big Lie, is not only a liar, he is a thief.”

Saturday, April 15, 2017

Who knew?

Happy Saturday y'all. Happy Easter tomorrow and see you at the fish fry!

And this is how it came to be -----

The king wanted to go fishing. He called on the royal weather forecaster and inquired as to the weather forecast for the next few hours.
The weatherman assured him that there was no chance of rain in the coming days, So the king went fishing with his wife, the queen. On the way he met a farmer on his donkey.
Upon seeing the king the farmer said, "Your Majesty, you should return to the palace! In just a short time I expect a huge amount of rain to fall in this area".
The king was polite and considerate, he replied: "I hold the palace meteorologist in high regard. He is an extensively educated and experienced professional. And besides, I pay him very high wages. He gave me a very different forecast. I trust him."
So the king continued on his way. However, a short time later a torrential rain fell from the sky. The King and Queen were totally soaked and their entourage chuckled upon seeing them in such a shameful condition.
Furious, the king returned to the palace and gave the order to fire the professional. Then he summoned the farmer and offered him the prestigious and high paying role of royal forecaster.
The farmer said, "Your Majesty, I do not know anything about forecasting. I obtain my information from my donkey. If I see my donkey's ears drooping, it means with certainty that it will rain."
So the king hired the donkey.
And thus began the practice of hiring dumb asses to work in the government and occupy its highest and most influential positions.
The practice is unbroken to this date and thus, the democrat symbol was born!!!

Happy Good Friday

For those wanting to opt out it's NATIONAL EX-SPOUSE DAY

National Ex-Spouse Day is observed annually on April 14th. This day recognizes one’s ex-spouse. The question has been asked why would one want to celebrate their Ex? We are not sure there is an answer to that question.
For a wide variety of reasons, sometimes marriages just do not work out. Recent statistics show that the divorce rate for first marriages is at 50 percent. Some people find that they get along better after a divorce than they did during the marriage.
National Ex-Spouse Day was created in 1987 by Reverend Ronald Coleman of Kansas City, Mo.

Hey Deb.
I'm covered.

Get ready for an Easter filled weekend. Sunrise Service on Sunday at, well, sunrise. Deephole Park. Easter Egg Hunt for the little ones is at Jarboe about 1:30. Fish fry is there too. And for the love of Pete don't forget the nearly world famous deviled egg contest.

HAPPY EASTER Y'ALL!

National Eight Track Tape Day?

National Eight Track Tape Day - April 11

reddit

But why? Oh well,
National Eight Track Tape Day on April 11 recognizes an era that was here and gone in a short 20 years. It is a day to remember listening to great music of the sixties and seventies on eight-track tapes.
Popular from the mid-1960s through the early 1980s, eight track tapes are a magnetic tape sound recording technology.
Eight track tape, also called Stereo 8, was created in 1964 by Bill Lear of Lear Jet Corporation along with Ampex, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Motorola and RCA Victor Records and released in 1965.
It was in September of 1965 that Ford Motor Company introduced factory installed and dealer installed eight track tape players as an option to buyers on three of its 1966 models, the Thunderbird, Mustang and Lincoln. All of Ford’s vehicles offered this tape player upgrade option on the 1967 model. Through the 1980s optional eight track players were available in many cars and trucks.

Too bad I haven't seen a player in 20 years....

Numbers, we got numbers. A little over 7 years this blog hit the ether and for better or worse, here we are today. I tend to think for the better. Todays post is number 1,000, which has led to 436,722 pageviews from 10 different countries resulting in 6,345 comments. A side note that kind of surprised me is the primary browser in Google Chrome at 75% and the leading OS is Mac. Whooda thunk it. Thanks for dropping by, don't forget to tip your server, we'll be here all week.

Personally I think Ol' Boy on United shoulda got up when he was told to by the Po Po. It's just too close to Resisting ....plus all that whining made him sound like a pu$$y ....

NATIONAL SIBLINGS DAY

National Siblings Day (also referred to as Sibling Day) is observed on April 10. It is a day created to honor our brothers and our sisters.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Spend some time with your siblings if you have any and use #NationalSiblingsDay to post on social media.
HISTORY
National Siblings Day was founded by native New Yorker, Claudia Evart in 1995 to honor and celebrate siblings. After losing her two siblings early in life in separate accidents, she knew how important siblings could be in our lives.
Call yer kin.

Having a bad day at work? Read this.
Now, whaddaya say...

Chloe's story. Ever notice the asparagus fern in my front yard? Me either. Not. Sometime after 1953 and before 1959 my Grandmother put two massive cement planters on her front porch in Griffith Indiana. They look a little like these and weigh a ton and a half each.
In one side was this fern and and some stinky ass flowers in the other. My first memory of this plant is that it has teeth. A good lesson for a 5 year old. I just google mapped the house, My Uncle Tony lives there, and those planters are still there! When She passed in 1972 my Mom and one of her big Sisters uprooted the fern and whacked it with a hatchet so each could have a piece. I'm not sure what My Auntie Leigh did with her half but in 1994 when my Mom was still able to talk she gave me this scrawny twig in a tiny pot and said, and I quote "If you kill this plant I will come back and haunt your ass". Never one to question the Momster, I kept an eye on it and named her Chloe. One morning a few years later I woke to find Chloe hidden in a cloud of spider web like stuff. Remembering my orders I ran, not walked, over to Maas Nursery on Toddville road. I held the infected plant up to the lady at the counter and she proceeded to spray me and my spider mite infected plant with some really nasty stuff. Once properly educated and wiped down I was sent on my way. Chloe was planted in a large pot when we moved to Sunny San Leon. Sometime in the late 90's my little Sister wanted a cutting so we upended the pot and did a 1972 on the fern. When we moved to the Island Chloe was put in a still larger pot and allowed to "flow". Enter Hurricane Ike. She went under "water" as did everything else on the deck but unlike most everything else she survived. After all the post Ike construction we discovered Chloe root bound to the nth degree and reenacted 1972. Now we had Chloe and C2 and they were planted in matching containers. Sometime in 2013 ish we noticed nasty yellow jackets
had built a subterranean nest in C2 and after everything we tried failed, C2 was euthanized. Chloe persevered. 45 years after the hatchet incident of '72 we used a machete. We had to reduce Chloe to a manageable  mass and we finally planted her big ass in the dirt. Go Chloe go. That's 10 minutes of your life you'll never get back but I feel better. And so does my Mom.

Found out Officer Charles Akin has left our fair City. Charlie, I know you drop in here from time to time so from me to you, Adios my friend. I miss you dropping in from time to time. You made our little pile of mud a better place to live. All the best to you and yours!

A little out there but

What the heck. It's NATIONAL NAME YOURSELF DAY
National Name Yourself Day is observed each year on April 9.   To celebrate, you are allowed to give yourself a new name for one day. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to have a different name, this would be the day to find out.  If you like your name and do not want to play along, you can try a nickname instead. The nickname might just stick with you.
HOW TO OBSERVEPick yourself a new name and use #NationalNameYourselfDay to post on social media.
SO we're sitting in the basement, that's how i refer to the space under the house not under ground, with some neighbors. They get ready to leave and Lauren spots a water leak over by the bar. Sure enough there's a spray coming down. Problem is there is no water line in the vicinity. This won't end well. After a minute or so it slows and stops. MJ goes up to the deck to see if we sprung a leak from there but no. I am really not liking this. Yesterday W and I drop the cover boards between the stringers and go searching for the cause of the leak. Remember when I said this was not going to end well? As the cover board drops so does a turd. A big 'un. People size, Then another and a third turd is hanging in some romex. One petrified mouse carcass and a whole lot of other "stuff" rains down on us. We are not amused. I immediately rule myself out as having dropped a deuce in such a small space but I need to quiz the teenager. He has an alibi. When we moved in we had 'possums in the attic so I know well what 'possum poop looks like. Dogs are out. Squirrels? not a chance. Wyatt, google raccoon scat and find out if they eat mice. Two minutes later it's Raccoons 2 Me 0. Not in a million years. Not until Wyatt informed me that the night before He spotted a Coon on the deck, rear paws on the deck, front paws on the rail. That's a 5 year old! Now the do-do's are making sense. So now we get to make the call,  Coons or Rats. Trash Pandas it is.

Huge shout out to all the friends and neighbors who turned out yesterday for the Island Wide Cleanup Day. Nothing short of awesome. Super Thanks to Pam Linbeck for making this happen. Again. It's neighbors like this that make this the place to be. Bravo Zulu Pam.
Team Boat Ramp

Diana H is heading up the Children's Easter Egg Hunt. W and Ethan will be her leg men. If you would like your kids to be a part of it let her know. She is asking for donations of plastic eggs and goodies to go inside them. The collection bucket is in my driveway. I'll check it often for perishables or you can just put your donations in my downstairs fridge.

Time to sneak in a boat ride.
Amazing fact number 226.
Of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, 3 fell due to earthquakes, 2 due to fires, 1 probably never even existed, and only one stands today—The Pyramid of Khufu.
Thanks Amazing Fact Generator!
