IslandDrumz

Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

Come on Friday...

Before I forget again, I have to say well done Clear Lake Shores. You did it again. This years (9th) annual Drag Race offered something different. Instead of just being "eclectic" it was asking for donations to a worthy cause. I think it was neighbor Paula who suggested the Race benefit the Houston Food Bank but I could be wrong. Short version, Of the 150 or so that came out to cheer on your favorite contestant or just to root for all 16 entrants, you managed to donate 1 full pallet of food AND enough money to provide meals for 342 needy souls. That is just freakin; awesome. I love this place.

 From Neighbor Dennis:
Hello Clear Lake Shores!
I just wanted to take a minute and invite all of you out to a house concert featuring Matt Hoggatt. The house concert will take place on Sunday June 1, from 1-4PM at our house at 218 Clear Lake Rd.

If you are not  familiar with Matt he wrote a  song "Dear Jimmy Buffett" which won him a record contract with Jimmy Buffets record label Mailboat records. His music is heard on Margaritaville and Beachfront radio. Matt has been in our area before, performing at both Noah's Ark and T-Bone Toms. He's  preparing to release his second album on Buffett's Mailboat Records label.

The house concert is open to everyone, and we are suggesting attendee's donate $10 to Matt in exchange for his performance. Bring your own drinks, snacks, and lawn chairs.

You can learn more, and reserve your seat by visiting http://www.piratesandpoets.net/live-at-the-lizard.html Feel free to email me or Jon Burns (jb@piratesandpoets.net) with any questions you have.

Thanks and we'll see you all on June 1!

MT. VERNON, TEXAS, WHOREHOUSE SUES LOCAL CHURCH:
Diamond D's brothel began construction on an expansion of their building to increase their ever-growing business.
In response, the local Baptist Church started a campaign to block the business from expanding -- with morning, afternoon, and evening prayer sessions at their church.
Work on Diamond D's progressed right up until the week before the grand reopening when lightning struck the whorehouse and burned it to the ground!
After the cat-house burned the church folks were rather smug in their outlook, bragging about "the power of prayer." But late last week 'Big Jugs' Jill Diamond, the owner/madam, sued the church, the preacher and the entire congregation on the grounds that the church ... "was ultimately responsible for the demise of her building and her business -- either through direct or indirect divine actions or means."
In its reply to the court, the church vehemently and voraciously denied any and all responsibility or any connection to the building's demise.
The crusty old judge read through the plaintiff's complaint and the
defendant's reply, and at the opening hearing he commented:
"I don't know how the hell I'm going to decide this case, but it appears
from the paperwork, that we now have a whorehouse owner who staunchly believes in the power of prayer, and an entire church congregation that thinks it's bullshit."

Happy Memorial Day!

THE ONLY FLAG THAT DOESN'T FLY
Between the fields where the flag is planted, there are 9+ miles of flower fields
that go all the way to the ocean. The flowers are grown by seed companies.
It's a beautiful place, close to Vandenberg AFB.

Check out the dimensions of the flag. The Floral Flag is 740 feet long
and 390 feet wide and maintains the proper Flag dimensions, as
described in Executive Order #10834. This Flag is 6.65 acres and is
the first Floral Flag to be planted with 5 pointed Stars, comprised of White
Larkspur. Each Star is 24 feet in diameter, each Stripe is 30 feet wide.

This Flag is estimated to contain more than 400,000 Larkspur plants
with 4-5 flower stems each, for a total of more than 2 million flowers.
For our soldiers....

When you receive this, please stop for a moment and say a prayer for our servicemen.

It's National Scavenger Hunt Day

And National Escargot Day. At least one sounds like fun. Bon appetite?

Way more important, It's Memorial Day Weekend, Not only the official start of summer but a great time to give a thought to all those who gave all. The ultimate sacrifice. We all know someone.

Yes it is a somber occasion. As it should be. And there are those who think the 9th Annual Drag Race should not be held on this particular weekend. To them I say what better weekend. I say this as a Vietnam veteran. Why did I volunteer 4 years of my time for a whopping $288 a month, or for that matter why did you if not to defend our freedom of speech. As much as Hanoi Jane still irks me that was her right. I don't have to agree with it but I don't have to like it. And don't get me started on burning my flag. The drag race is nothing more than a hoot. Kid oriented? There will be a hundred kids there. There have been kids in the race. There is nothing going on here that you don't see on TV. So take a deep breath, it'll be ok.

We made the Houston Chronicle front page TWICE! Once as a perrenial Speed trap location and Once for our Farmers Market. Thanks Chief for keeping us safe. Keep up the good work. And Great Job to the whole Farmers Market crew.

Have a safe weekend y'all.

National Devil's Food Cake day

Annually celebrated on May 19, it is National Devil’s Food Cake Day.  All chocolate lovers will enjoy this day when they eat their share of delicious“Devil’s Food” cake.
“Devil’s Food” cake is rich, divine chocolate cake.  It differs from a regular chocolate cake by its darker color and tends to be more moist and airy.    A difference in preparing the “Devil’s Food” cake is that hot or boiling water is used as the main liquid.  Cocoa is typically used in the batter, as opposed to chocolate, and coffee is added for a special flavor.  A rich chocolate frosting usually accompanies the cake.
It is believed that the “Devil’s Food” cake was invented in the United States in the early 20th century.  There is a recipe for a “Devil’s Food” cake as early as 1905.
It may be that this cake was named for its contrast to the snow-white “Angel Cakes” that were being made prior to the “Devil’s Food” cake.
“Devil’s Food” cake is one of the country’s most popular cakes.

                                It's DRAG RACE TIME!

It's time for one of the most interesting events on the Clear Lake Shores Social Calendar.  The 9th (?) Annual Clear Lake Shores Drag Race Extravaganza!

On Sunday, May 25th the brave and beautiful "Ladies" will be called to the starting line at about 7:30 for the customary parade around Lowell Brown Sunset Park.  Afterwards the ''girls'' will go before the judges to determine the lucky trophy caretaker for the next year.  Diane Johnson is making her famous sashes for this years event too.  Thanks to the research and efforts of Paula Brown we will be collecting donations to support the Houston Food Bank.  There will be donation boxes for canned goods and donation cans for cash or whatever you choose to give.  This is going to be dishonorable behavior for an honorable cause.  If you choose to dress up or just come watch please bring a donation so that we can support this charity and show that - though we may be of questionable character and often display poor judgment - The people of Clear Lake Shores are good people and we are willing to share for a good cause.

This event is not limited to Clear Lake Shores residents only so try and trick any off-island friends and unsuspecting relatives into dressin like a girl and showing up at the park between 6:30 and 7 pm on Sunday, Memorial Day Weekend.  It's always a fun-filled evening with more entertainment then you will likely want to see.  It's a display of poor taste, bad outfits, overstuffed bras and pure ugliness, however there will be kids present so let's keep it as clean as we can considering it's a bunch of men dressed like ladies drinking cocktails and prancing around a park.

There are really no rules.  You can't win two years in a row, so we don't have to compete with Frank's sexy legs this year.  Try to keep it PG-13 and have a good time!  The judges will be announced at the last minute to minimize the opportunity for bribery.  But again, there are really no rules!

NATIONAL BUTTERMILK BISCUIT DAY

National Buttermilk Biscuit Day is celebrated each year, in the United States, on May 14.  Today is a food holiday designated to the biscuit.
Biscuits are made using baking powder or baking soda as a leavening agent rather than yeast.  A typical buttermilk biscuit recipe contains flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, butter and buttermilk.  They are often referred to as “quick bread”, indicating they do not need time to rise before baking.

Prior to the American Civil War, biscuits emerged by cooks as a cheap addition to meals.  While being made, the dough was beaten and folded to incorporate air, which expanded while baking, causing the biscuit to rise.  The biscuit soon became popular as the people realized the hardness of the biscuit, compared to a slice of bread, worked better to wipe up gravy on their plates, creating the well known meal, biscuits and gravy.

Alexander P. Ashbourne patented the first biscuit cutter in 1875.

Calling all Bunco Players! Don't know if you saw the notice or not but it's tomorrow night at the Clubhouse. Adults only please.

And ready or not here they come!!

On Coyotes and

National Women’s Checkup Day. It’s also National Nutty Fudge Day. Coincidence? I think not.

A big shout out to the Hoerner family and all their volunteers for once again spearheading the Island Wide Garage Sale. I hope everyone went to bed with more money than they woke up with. In case you didn’t know the IWGS is one of the Civic Clubs biggest money makers. Thanks again B&D.

Interesting neighbors we have, Thanks Wiki.
“…also known as the American jackal, brush wolf, or the prairie wolf, is a species of canine found from Panama in the south, north through Mexico, the United States, and Canada. It occurs as far north as Alaska and all but the northernmost portions of Canada.[3] Currently, 19 subspecies are recognized.[4]
In areas where wolves have been exterminated, coyotes usually flourish.
As New England became increasingly settled and the resident wolves were eliminated, the coyote population increased, filling the empty ecological niche.
Coyotes appear better able than wolves to live among people.[30]
Coyotes have been known to live a maximum of 18 years in captivity;[3] the maximum longevity in the wild is 14 1/2 years.[31]
They seem to be better than dogs at observational learning.
The coyote evolved in North America during the Pleistocene epoch 1.8 million years ago
It fills roughly the same ecological niche in the Americas that is filled in Eurasia and Africa by the similarly sized canids called jackals, among which the coyote is sometimes counted.
Its closest living relative is the gray wolf
Unlike the wolf, the coyote's range has expanded in the wake of human civilization, and coyotes readily reproduce in metropolitan areas
Sometimes labelled as carnivores but more often as omnivores, coyotes are opportunistic, versatile feeders.
They eat small mammals such as (depending on the region in which it lives) voles, prairie dogs, eastern cottontails, ground squirrels, mice, birds, snakes, lizards, deer, javelina, and livestock, as well as insects and other invertebrates.
The coyote will also target any species of bird that nests on the ground. They will eat carrion, but tend to prefer fresh meat. Fruits and vegetables can form a significant part of the coyote's diet in the summer and autumn. Part of the coyote's success as a species is its dietary adaptability. As such, coyotes have been known to eat human rubbish and domestic pets.
Urban populations of coyotes have been known to actively hunt cats, and to leap shorter fences to take small dogs
Despite being extensively hunted, the coyote is one of the few medium- to large-sized animals that has enlarged its range since human encroachment began”

In case you haven’t heard they got Willie the cat over on West Shore. He was Glen and Sharon’s pet for 13 years. Folks Coyotes have been in the neighborhood for a million years and they’ll probably be here when we’re gone. As long as we provide them food they have no reason to go elsewhere.

"The cayote is a living, breathing allegory of Want. He is always hungry. He is always poor, out of luck and friendless. The meanest creatures despise him and even the flea would desert him for a velocipede."
