Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

Here comes May

In 1965 Joe Sutter joined the Boeing design team looking for a new ship. In 1970 Pan AM launched Clipper Victor at Washington Dulles International airport. The Original Jumbo Jet, The Queen of the Skies took to the air. The first wide body has a range of over 8,000 miles, can be configured to carry over 650 passengers and can reach a top speed of mach .85 (570 MPH). The first 1,000 were in service by 1993 and while originally expected to be obsolete after the first 400 there were orders for almost 500 more. It even had a spiral staircase. And now there one parked on NASA Road 1. The big pieces anyway.

Signed up for the Island Wide Garage Sale? Don’t wait until the last minute or they can’t get your location on the map!

NATIONAL ZIPPER DAY

This day celebrates something that we often do not think about and just automatically take for granted.  National Zipper Day is celebrated each year on April 29.
It was first in 1851 that Elias Howe, the inventor of the sewing machine, received a patent for an “Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure”.  Howe did not market it and missed the recognition he may have received for his invention. It's all i got.

From neighbor Crystal.
"We are having a Moving and Estate Sale on Saturday, May 3. There is a scheduling reason we are not having it on the day of the Island Wide Sale. The reason is not interesting.
We will be moving soon and need to thin out our belongings. Also, Eileen Ponton will be selling the contents of a house belonging to a deceased family member. We will have household furniture, porch furniture, garage items, gardening supplies, a King size bed and frame, linens, kitchen items and much much more. This is not junk. Nothing will be 25 cents.
This Saturday, May 3, 8 until 2. 402 Oak Road, corner of Oak and Ivy.
Bring your friends, family, and paper money. Whining will not lower the prices but might get you delivery on the island.

Mmmmmmm

This is much more like it. Great day to get a little boat work done. Before I forget, I am looking for a metal detector. I just need to borrow it for 15 minutes. WE need to locate the Lat / Long on the Time capsule the CLub buried 8 years ago. Any of you treasure hunters out there? Spread the word. Thanks.

Hello my friends!
April has been a very interesting and busy month for us, as we figure out how retirement works!  That said it has also been a very good month musically.
Tomorrow night I will be playing for 300~400 old surfers at the 1st Annual "Old Guys Surf Reunion" in Surfside TX, then hanging out at the beach for the rest of the weekend with them.  Many of them are friends of mine from the 60s!
OGSR will also pay special tribute Saturday morning to the ones who can't be here with a Hawaiian style memorial paddle out.
Sunday, April 27th I will be playing in the back courtyard of The Kemah Steak Company at 707 Bradford, Kemah, TX.  Jerry Diaz will kick it off at 3PM and I will play from 5 ~ 7.  They have the best steaks and wines in town!
Then on May 3rd, I will be playing my favorite Clear Lake Shores bar, Aspens Bar and Grill at 817 Clear Lake Road, CLS, TX.  This gig will also represent the "After Party" for the inaugural Jammin' On Jarboe Concert - 2014.  If you are going to Jammin', come on over when the cops make them turn the music off and party with the crew!
Lots of fun coming up....I hope you can join me!
Peace and Love!

 Reminder(s)
A 1,000-foot convoy carrying the nonprofit Space Center Houston’s historic shuttle carrier aircraft will journey home on an eight-mile trek through the bay area during the nights of April 28-29, arriving the morning of April 30.
Roads will close in stages so city workers and utility providers can dismantle streetlights, signs and utility poles as the convoy approaches and will re-open after it passes.
The portion of Highway 3 (Old Galveston Road) between its intersections with Scarsdale and NASA Parkway will close 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, April 28. Then on Tuesday, April 29, the westbound portion of NASA Parkway from Highway 3 to Saturn Lane will close 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. (See Route Map)
Thanks to extensive pre-planning efforts, no utilities are expected to be interrupted. The convoy will travel at night for the safety of our neighbors and the workers involved in this complex transfer, as well as to minimize the impact on local residents, the traveling public and businesses.
The project to disassemble and safely transport the massive airplane was done in partnership with 25 private, public, and government organizations, many of whom did the work for little or no charge.
Moving at walking speed, the convoy will carry the dissembled Boeing 747 sections on seven different trailers from Ellington Field. The largest section moving intact is the fuselage, measuring 25 feet wide, 35 feet high and over 180 feet long, which will travel on a Goldhofer multi-wheeled, self-propelled trailer.
Big Move Info Line: 281-244-2119.
Help us bring the 747 in for a landing!
Text “Shuttle747” to 41444 to donate

There is a triathlon that involves the Kemah Bridge going on Sunday. you might want to factor that in your travel plans. Or not.

Have a great weekend.

It's St George's Day

This is for all our family, friends and neighbors who hail from across the pond. You’ve all heard a little about St. George but did you know he is the Patron Saint of England? Do you know why? If you have a bell feel free to ring it at 6:00 this evening.
“St George was a roman soldier who refused to take part in the persecution of Christians, which led to him being tortured and executed in Palestine, making him an early martyr.
The most famous legend surrounding St George is that of him slaying a dragon, a symbol of the devil in the Middle Ages, and saving a princess who had been offered as sacrifice.
St George’s day is also the day of William Shakespeare's birth, in 1564, and death, in 1616” The Telegraph

It's San Jacinto Day!

178 years ago General Sam Houston defeated General Santa Ana right around the corner from here at San Jacinto. Here’s a bonus question, What was San Jacinto named after? Happy Birthday Texas and to my bud Larry Wayne Lindelow. I think Larry was at the battle, off on the side lines because he was too old to fight.

I hope you had a great Easter. As always it was a fantastic turn out at Deep Hole Park for the Sunrise Service. Fog and all. I gotta admit the preacher rolled with it. Job well done all the way around.
Team Dowell worked their magic at the fish fry. Not only did they cook all that awesome fish, they bought and donated all that awesome fish to your Civic Club for this little fund raiser. That’s pretty cool. One more reason why I love living here. Thanks all the way around Dowells!
I got the chance to drop in on the Deviled Egg-stravaganza put on by Caldwells. It’s sorta like art you can eat. Tasty, tasty art. You haven’t lived till you’ve had one of Diana Chronisters Deviled Scotch Egg. And the Eggs with Caviar? Yum! Pass the Rolaids.

I was coming back on the Island early Sunday morning. I made a trip to Shipley’s for the Sunrise Service crowd and was treated to the sight of our brand new street lamps in action. I think they look awesome. It will be really cool when they bury some of the power lines. Very nice indeed.

In case you missed it we have another celebrity artist amongst us. Roselyn Pierce will have some of her awesome photo art available at the Art Walk in Galveston. “I also will have my photo art hanging at Affaire d Art on Postoffice for Art walk so please pop in and see me too” Thanks for the heads up Roselyn, If MJ and I get a chance to do the Art Walk again this year we’ll definitely stop by.  Neighbors, If you haven’t seen some of Roselyn’s art on Facebook or hanging in some of the local business’ you need to check it out at the Art Walk. If you miss it you’re cheating yourself.
