IslandDrumz

Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

End of January already

That means there's a Civic Club meeting next Thursday. We have lots to talk about and get 2014 up and running. We'll start with Mancakes on the 15th and all the Yachty Gras festivities. We'd love to see you there.
Was in the Post Office the other day and saw this. Anyone recognize these faces?

Neighbor Ronnie shared this gorgeous photo of a dish sered up by the fairly new Marina Cafe. It's the one next to All That Blooms and the Scooter Store down on the bayou.

This from neighbor Nancy. It seems to me for being retired she sure is busy....
You may have roots, or live in Galveston County, or simply have the desire to support this most beneficial agency. The Family Service Center is the only non-profit agency in our area to provide mental health services to families and individuals of all ages and regardless of income level. It seems amazing to me that 100 years ago, the founders of this agency already knew that mental health services were needed to strengthen families. We still need these services most desperately today.

What a wonderful gift you can give to our community while enjoying a Valentine's gift to yourself at the same time. Please join me at the centennial celebration of the FSC on February 8, 2014. Contact me for additional details. This is certain to be a very special evening!! Don't miss it.

Stay warm and keep healthy,
Nancy

IMPORTANT STUFF HERE FROM THE BOY SCOUTS!
Is it time to replace your US Flag?
With January upon us, many people reflect on the previous year and look forward to the new year.  When you think about last year’s patriotic holidays and how you hung your United States of America flag, did you think it may be time to replace your flag?  Is it getting old, worn, tattered, frayed or faded beyond repair?  If you answered “yes”, then it is time for you to retire the flag, and NO, this does not mean simply throwing the flag in the trash can and purchasing another.  The flag is our symbol of our country, a symbol of our patriotism, a symbol of all those that have served and those that have fallen  defending our country.  This symbol should not simply be thrown away but instead the flag should be properly retired.  Boy Scout Troop 2322 will be conducting a flag retirement service in February of 2014 and encourages all residents of Clear Lake Shores to bring their US flags that need to be retired to the Clear Lake Shores City Hall during the month of January.  All flags brought to City Hall will be collected by Troop 2322 and will be included in their service.

It's National Peanut Butter Day!

WOO HOO! Can I get a HALLELEUJA!

Drive careful, sounds like some of that crappy yankee weather has stumbled across the San Jacinto river.

The City is looking for a few good folks to help out with the upcoming election. If you're interested please talk to Christy in the office. Tell her you want to be an election worker.

This from neighbor Jim, Looking to trade a 48v club car 25mph motor for an 18mph motor. I now have teenagers driving and need to slow the buggy down a bit. Jim – 2ATE1-229O27five

Not A Bad Tuesday

I see all these fruit trees around the Island are coming to bear. Maybe my little guy will bring me some orange treats next year. If you are looking for a home for your excess fruit please give me a call I’ll come and get them. I’d hate to see them go to waste with this juicer sitting on my counter.

NOT A CIVIC CLUB MEETING
The Civic Club officers are going to sit down at 6 this Thursday and make a rough draft of this years event calendar. Want to see up close what we are planning for the year? Drop by.

I got this from neighbor Pricilla. I like it. Simplistic but close to home. We’ve been working his angle for a while now and it’s really a lot easier that you think. Give it a look.

Happy Friday!

Sorry to drop this time bomb on your Friday but today was Jim Croce’s birthday. He would have been 70. Not a typo. Sorry. Unlike us Time in a Bottle never gets old.

Like I said yesterday my scale would dictate my breakfast and lunch on this (extended) last day of juicing. I don’t have a Dr’s office rated scale, I use a digital readout that measures to the tenth of a pound. Like all non-professional scales it has a margin of error that escapes me but margin of error aside the difference was 15 pounds. It’s not all an optical illusion either. This whole adventure goes down in my book as pretty damned amazing. The green stuff still tastes like crap but If you’re in my age bracket you’ve had to take a spoonful of Cod Liver oil when you were a kid and that taste still reigns supreme as the nastiest stuff to ever pass my lips. A stop by Baybrooks Fresh Seafood in Seabrook will provide our first chewable dinner Friday night. Aside from yesterday’s grapes that is.

Did you know Skippers is planning a big expansion? Yep. Stop by and ask them about it.

Day 5

Just had Day 5 “dinner”. It was OK. That’s all. I think I’m done juicing. I will admit that when I got home I cheated a tad. I had 4 whole grapes and 2 peanuts. Salted. mmmmmmm. Depending on what the scale tells me in the morning will decide tomorrows lunch. I have to say, going on the results so far It will be juice one more day. The results are something. The green stuff is just difficult to deal with. Once you get past the look there’s the smell. If blindfolded and asked to pick one I would gladly go to bed hungry. And then there’s the taste. I have found that if I hold my nose and just slam it, it’s doable. I have to give Mel her due though. She has been juicing up a storm and been doing her homework via the internet looking for different recipes. Green stuff aside the fruit juices are great but I need meat. Neighbor Danny told us, and he’s a regular at this, the urge to chew something is the hardest par to get over. Score one for Dano.

Had a Yachty Gras meeting with some folks. Who’s up for a Mardi Gras golf cart parade? We’re aiming for the Saturday of the Yachty Gras boat parade. More details as they firm up. Get this on your calendar.

Did you make it to the Jarbo Bayou meeting last month? Here is the latest. It should be good.
The Houston-Galveston Area Council, in conjunction with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), invite you to join us for another Public Meeting to discuss a Bacteria Study (TMDL) for Jarbo Bayou.

Meeting Details:
January 23, 2014
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Club House

Why Another Public Meeting?

Following the success of the December 2013 Jarbo Meeting, the purpose of this Public Meeting is twofold:
1.    Review Bacteria Data Collected, To Date
2.    Build a Locally-Driven, Diverse Steering Committee
About the Bayou
Jarbo Bayou, located in Galveston County, is a tributary of Clear Lake. Since 2002, high concentrations of bacteria, which are found in both human and animal waste, have been observed in the bayou.
The presence of these bacteria may indicate a health risk to people who swim or wade in the bayou-activities referred to as "contact recreation" in the Texas Surface Water Quality Standards.

Day 4

Happy Birthday to the King. Elvis would have been 79 today.

Things are looking up. Dinner was a “Cajun” theme that involved garlic, celery, tomatoes, parsley, cucumber and a splash of hot sauce. Flavor at last. This will be Friday’s juice. Just add a shot of Vodka. Desert was an absolute treat. Mostly fruit but not entirely. It sure was tasty though. We need to do something about the looks though. I open the fridge door and it creeps me out. It looks like so many science experiments in there. Maybe an opaque container. It was never my intention to start one more, soon to be written off as yet another, failed New Years Diet. Originally I just wanted to see what all the ruckus was about with the Juicing scene. My adventure evolved in to a kind of detox/cleanse vacation for my Liver. The scale is telling me other things. When I went to my last foot doctor a week ago I was embarrassed at the number showing on her scale. I had never seen that number before. When I got off the scale this morning I saw a number I haven’t seen in a couple of years. Very interesting. I’m still not going on a diet.

Day 3

Hump Day. The red stuff I had for “breakfast” was better than yesterdays. The Beets have been officially fired. I don’t care if you like them or if you grew up on a beet farm. I have assured my son that beets have been added to the list of things I will never insist he try. Scoot over brussels sprouts. Not even with bacon. Still not sure why the coconut water is a part of the menu. MJ said it adds electrolytes but hey, so does Gatorade. It’s the same price but a lot tastier. Had my warm water with breakfast. Friday I’ll have a cup of coffee. Should be interesting. Making plans for Friday dinner. With meat.

Polar vortex? What happened to El Nino? Or La Nina? And Winter Storm Hercules? Why, back in my day we just called it Winter! Both Ways!

Council Meeting tonight! See you there.

Day 2

Need to look at different recipes for grass. The red, beet red, combo I had for breakfast left a little to be desired. Mostly taste. But it beets, pun intended, the green thing I had for lunch. Why does it smell so…………………green? This stuff needs some Tony’s. And some meat. 3 days to go.

Day 1

Off we go. Yesterday we went to Randalls to "stock up" on items we intend to juice. I can now go to my grave saying I have bought a beet. Several actually. You can guess most of them. We also bought a piece of Ginger root. That was new. about a hundred bucks later we walked out with this.

Well we picked a menu item from one of a zillion and decided on breakfast.

It just so happens that I actually like all the above items. I've never had them in this quantity or paired quite like this but what the heck. It can't be all bad.
Well we fired up the Breville. I'm not sure how this rates a juicer but I will say it is a beast. It looks like it belongs in a doctors office. It handled all those carrots and apples like nobodys business. Imagine a desktop wood chipper. It didn't even blink at the lemons.

This is what picture number two was reduced to. Not the first time I've drank my breakfast mind you. if you like carrots you've got it made. Bottoms up!

I'll be taking down the Christmas decorations outside the Clubhouse and on the bridge on Monday, Jan 6 at about 9:30am. If you are looking for something to do, please join me. Thanks, Diana Chronister

Saturday, January 4, 2014

Beautiful day!

Not a bad start to January eh? The weatherman says we better enjoy today because this gorgeous weather is going to be short lived. Too bad. No complaints though when I look at the national weather.

From Diana and the Parks Committee:
I'll be taking down the Christmas decorations outside the Clubhouse and on the bridge on Monday, Jan 6 at about 9:30am. If you are looking for something to do, please join me.
Thanks,
Diana Chronister

Always looking for something different. Not sure if this is going to be quite what I had in mind but MJ has us lined up for something called a “Reboot”. We are going to Juice our way to a healthier 2014. Ready or not I’m going to blog about it.

The CLSCC Board of directors met Thursday and hashed out the final updates to the By-Laws. Watch your email.

To the anon reader who believes ”more people would get involved in the Civic club and other goings on around here, except they don’t like many of the current people who spear head these projects” Please consider bringing your own spear to any meeting. We’d love to have you. Be a spear header, not a whiner. No one gets more irritated than me having to ask the same dozen folks to volunteer for any of the 2 dozen events the Club puts on. There are people who do and there are people who don’t.

SOLD!

It's National Trivia Day!!!

Well, here we are,

2014. Happy New Year Everyone! So far so good I guess. The Aggies beat Duke, (Sorry Steve) The Texans have a new coach, The Sandbar should be open this year and so should Chill. Did I mention I talked to Frank a couple of weeks ago? He has a new guy stepping up to get Chill back on track. More as I get it, Town Center project is finally showing signs of life, even if it is just a sidewalk And Phil Robertson is coming back. Should be a good year.
To the folks asking about the Civic Club’s Soup Cook Off, Please come to the next Club meeting and volunteer. That’s how these events happen. The next meeting will be February 6. We’ll get ManCakes lined out and set the stage for all the great events that will make 2014 one more fabulous year for our Island Paradise. I am going to propose a huge change for this years ManCakes and if you want to know what it is you’ll have to come to the meeting and vote on it. One of the first things on the agenda will be looking for the next set of Civic Club Officers. That will be done by putting together a nominating committee who will then searching the neighborhood for prospective candidates. Here’s your chance to make a difference and have a ton of fun while doing it.

 Going, going,......
