IslandDrumz

Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

Happy Thanksgiving Y'all

It's a beautiful day with lot's to be thankful for. May your turkey be moist and you have more to be thankful for than you deserve. Enjoy your day off and wave at those who are working today patrolling our streets.

Did you make it to the Town Center groundbreaking? At long last progress! Thanks for all your hard work and perservereance EDC

What about the Coffee with Cops? Captain Donaldson tells me it was a success and they are planning another outing. Hopefully the weather will be a tad more cooperative.

Your presence is requested at the next Civic Club meeting. It's next Thursday and this is a big one so I need you there. Our fair City has been asked if we would be interested in being the new host for the annual Yachty Gras Parade. If there is a party to be thrown you know the Civic Club will be hip deep in it. I sat in on a meeting with the YG folks and the City Administrator. We got the low down and I think the Yachting Capitol of Texas is just a natural fit for this gig. Short version is their President will be on the our agenda at the meeting to tell us about the event and answer any questions we might have. Our participation (pronounced “money”) will be voted on at the meeting so I’d really like to see a bunch of smiling faces.

From neighbor Sid:
Alan ,  I was trying to find any and all web sites around the area that have
event info and news for folks to findout what is going on.
HERE is a new website you could mention in your web page/blog ,  I will send you the list I make)
This is just something of interest that I wanted to put together to help folks stay informed.

 From neighbor Diane:
Would you mind posting on the blog that I am collecting stuffed animals for the local nursing home again this year? I would love to have one for every resident. Sarah and her roommate (Brittany) will be going with me to distribute them on Christmas morning. They are going to provide the music. (No don't worry, I will not sing). This was a big hit last year. It even brightened the day of some of the male residents too. I currently have 30 something in a closet ready to go. They told me they have about 168 residents.

Our address is 226 Narcissus. Tom has placed a large plastic box on the left side of our entry way with a sign.

Please plan on attending the much awaited Town Center Phase IA ceremonial ground breaking this Saturday at 10 am on the Okies property. We hope to get a group photo of all of us with shovels for release to the press and Islander. Note there is a 50% chance of rain. The rain date is at the same time and place on November 30th. I will ask George to forward a copy to City Council, Mayor and Chief of Police. This will be a very brief ceremony. Please feel free to forward to others.

 Upcoming Public Meeting!
Holy Crap!
Public Meeting to Discuss Bacteria in Jarbo Bayou
BACTERIA STUDY

The Houston-Galveston Area Council, in conjunction with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), invite you to join us for a Public Meeting to discuss a Bacteria Study (TMDL) for Jarbo Bayou.

Meeting Details:
December 12, 2013
1:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Club House
931 Cedar
Clear Lake Shores, TX 77565

About the Bayou
Jarbo Bayou, located in Galveston County, is a tributary of Clear Lake. Since 2002, high concentrations of bacteria, which are found in both human and animal waste, have been observed in the bayou.

The presence of these bacteria may indicate a health risk to people who swim or wade in the bayou-activities referred to as "contact recreation" in the Texas Surface Water Quality Standards.

Why a Public Meeting?
The purpose of this Public Meeting is to:

 1.  Share Study findings, to-date;
 2.  Receive feedback from the community; and
 3.  Present information on next steps.

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, H-GAC will provide for reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities attending H-GAC functions. Individuals requiring language interpretation or those with special communication needs should contact Kathy Janhsen<mailto:kathy.janhsen@h-gac.com>, Public Outreach and Education Planner, at least 24-hours prior to the event.

This'll do..

Thanks for coming out to the Civic Clubs annual Thanksgiving Dinner. Missed you Jimmy Mann. I hope you enjoyed yourself. If you did, tell your neighbors, If not tell me. We raised a few bucks for the Club and had an awesome dinner with family and friends. It doesn’t get a lot better than that. Next time you see Pege Wright tell her what a great job she did on the event. She ran everything that went on in the building. And for outside the building all kudos’ go to Bryan Hoerner and his A Team. Again. For the past 7 years they have been cooking all things turkey.
Thanks to John we have an updated membership list. Some of you can expect an email real soon. Thanks all round.

On deck is the Christmas Party. More as I get it

A few of you are looking for the City Council agenda. I usually don’t post it here because it is such a pain in the ass to convert it to a format that the blog will accept. Way too much work. If you look over there —->, on the right side of the blog page you will see a Websites list. The bottom site is the City’s web page. If you click on it the new and pretty dang cool web page pops up and one of the first buttons you see is Agendas & Minutes. Just click that square button and select the date you’re interested in. It won’t get any easier than that, I promise.

I got a chance to talk to Roxanne a little bit and she reassured me the Sandbar is back on track and moving forward. YAY SANDBAR!

No more Ramblers

All gone. My first trip to the left coast was in a 62 Rambler Wagon. Just thought you ought to know.  Anybody else spend any quality time in a Rambler? I'll accept AMC just 'cause it's a Jeep Thing. You carheads know what I mean.

Hey! The Annual Civic Club Thanksgiving Dinner is THIS Saturday. Please make plans to attend. You can't beat the price or the food. Pege Wright is still looking for a few volunteers to fill in the blanks. You can contact her or me. I promise you'll have fun!

This from Senor Beans:
I will be playing at Aspens Bar and Grill this Saturday night (Nov 16) from 7 ~ 11.  Aspens is a new little neighborhood bar in Clear lake Shores located at Aspen and Clear Lake Road (directly across the street from the Opus Bistro).
I have been fortunate to be playing a lot of private events lately, but I don't get to play for my friends and neighbors enough this way.  This is a good opportunity for us to get together and have a brew or two.
Vince, the owner is hoping to  expand his customer base by adding live music by folks like me!  It is a cozy little place in a cool location.
So, if you can, come on down to CLS and join me for a cool Saturday Night!

From Councilman Amanda Booren:
Good afternoon! I am collecting items to send a great big ginormous care package oversees for our troops just in time for the holidays. The donation will go toward an organization called Blue Star Mother's of America, who will package everything up and send it on its way.

Please consider purchasing an item or two and making a donation. You can drop it off at my house, or I will come to you to pick it up. I will also have a bucket at the Thanksgiving dinner this weekend if you just want to make a monetary donation.

Attached is a list of items. Surely you can find something on this list!  :) I need to have the items by December 5 so I can load up my car and take them to Humble on Dec. 7 for a packing party.

Thank you!

Happy Veterans Day!

I consider this my own personal Holiday. I earned this one. ADJ3 Batchelor U.S. Navy 1972-1976

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. In proclaiming the holiday, he said

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."[2]

The United States Congress passed a concurrent resolution seven years later on June 4, 1926, requesting that President Calvin Coolidge issue another proclamation to observe November 11 with appropriate ceremonies.[2] A Congressional Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U.S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday: "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day'."

In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks from Birmingham, Alabama, had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who died in World War I. Weeks led a delegation to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who supported the idea of National Veterans Day. Weeks led the first national celebration in 1947 in Alabama and annually until his death in 1985. President Reagan honored Weeks at the White House with the Presidential Citizenship Medal in 1982 as the driving force for the national holiday. Elizabeth Dole, who prepared the briefing for President Reagan, determined Weeks as the "Father of Veterans Day."

U.S. Representative Ed Rees from Emporia, Kansas, presented a bill establishing the holiday through Congress. President Dwight Eisenhower, also from Kansas, signed the bill into law on May 26, 1954.[3]

Thanks Wiki.

OK My. BAD on Señor Beans playing at Aspens Saturday. I misread the entire text from Vince. Ben will be playing THIS Saturday the 16th. Sorry for any confusion.

To get your Saturday started be sure to come to the Club House for the Civic Clubs umpteenth Annual Thanksgiving Dinner. That old building will smell better than a new car. If you’ve been in the past you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t had the pleasure you do not want to miss this. Watch for Club emails all week long. Not getting Club emails? Do we need to renew your membership? or maybe just your emil address…drop me a line at president@clscivicclub.com

From Neighbor Ramsey:
My husband and I live at 1010 South Shore Drive and we came across a very unhealthy cockatiel off the side of the road on our way to the Farmer's Market
on Saturday.  The bird was found in front of Aspen's and wasn't moving, however we have nursed it back to health and nothing seems to broken.  It seems to be a juvenile cockatiel as the green feathers on it's head are still coming in.  Can you perhaps please send an e-mail out to the islanders asking if anyone is missing a pet cockatiel?

We owe our WorldWar II veterans - and all our veterans - a debt we can never fully repay.

Found Dog

just got some sad news from Neltje. friend and neighbor Ann Burns has passed away. more as I get it.

Tonight's the night, Wave bye bye to daylight Savings time.

from neighbor Michelle,
I can't seem to post this info on the CLS Life is Good page, but wanted to get the word out that Emily and Scott Bean (next door to us on E Shore) found a dog this morning. She's some type of terrier, recently shorn/shaved, one ear up and one down; no collar or microchip (they took her to vet to check), and is in heat. She is very sweet. If anyone's looking for her, call Scott at 713-724-2395. They did post it on the Civic Club fb page with a pic.

Happy Friday Y'all! The Gout monster along with a fractured #4 metatarsal, ligament damage and tendonitis have kept me home again. Under other circumstances I would be jumping for joy but there will be no jumping. DANG IT!

A huge Thank You to Alyson & Trish for coming together at the last possible minute and putting together a Halloween Party for the kids.Job Well Done Ladies!

And to get your weekend off to a start, here's this...
Amended Complaint Just Filed
"Mr. Vern Johnson and Richard Sowrey,
Here is an opportunity of a life time.  You both need to tell the other council members the truth in regards to the fact that it was you two that ordered Jack Fryday to do your retaliation and to violate the Federal Civil Rights of so many.  Tell them how you ordered Jack Fryday to do the things that he did, such as, but not limited to, the Sandbar and Lynda and Patrick Michaelski.  If the other council members knew the truth but what ya’ll had ordered Jack Fryday to do then they would not have voted to terminate Jack Fryday.  What is alarming to me is the fact that your City Attorney knows of the massive fraud and schemes after Hurricane Ike in regards to the rebuild of the commercial rebuild area south of the bridge, Portofino and Watergate. Yet, they outright lied just like the City of Clear Lake Shores did to FEMA and the Texas Attorney General’s Office.  Jack Fryday as a 1099 contractor and numerous other current and prior city employees have done things because they were ordered to do it.

You need to immediately start righting the wrongs or I will do it for you.  Every resident and voter is going to know the truth about what has really gone on in Clear Lake Shores.  I am just about finished up in the Kemah exposure and now I will start the exposure of all of the fraud and the Civil Rights violations that took place in Clear Lake Shores, post Ike.  Jack Fryday does not deserve to be terminated.  He like many others were your two puppet on a string.  How dumb could ya’ll have been by denying that the substantially damage letters and the RSDE’s never existed.  When in fact the City of Clear Lake Shores helped some of the commercial building owners receive money or in some cases full policy limits using the City of Clear Lake Shores substantially damage letters.  The City of Clear Lake Shores selective enforcement of their own City Ordinances and State and Federal Laws that the City of Clear Lake Shores had adopted.
I need to have a response by Monday, November 4, 2013.
Thank you,
Blu Shields"
