IslandDrumz

Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

We are blessed with the rain here but there are others that are truly hurtin'. While this little sprinkle here and there goes a long way to save our lawns read the article here to get a feel for the others affected by this drought. So when you see a neighbor breaking the water rules, gently remind them we are in a drought and there are restrictions in place. When you're ready for your rain barrel remember all you have to do is contact Carrie. She lives on Oak. That's her in the Islander.

then go here

You can also get rain barrels in Bacliff at BayTec. Different colors and sizes. Don't just sit there whining, do something about it!

More about the amazing Mr. Derry. We had a picture done by him of our header picture from the blog. It was taken by Mel's Dad, Salty John when he was here last. Copper worked his magic and I am here to tell you it is take your breath away awesome. Copper I have more business on the way. I have some old photos in dire need of restoration.

Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet.

Happy Birthday to...

Ugh. I hate to even say this but Mick Jagger is …….70. Ugh! I think I just heard the last of my black hairs turn grey. Did you know the Stones were formed in 1962? Jumpin’ Jack Flash was released in ’66. Hope I didn’t rain all over your Friday buzz.

Hey a little follow up on Copper Derry’s stuff. Did you make it out to the Fourth Celebration at the Shelley Pavilion? If you did you probably strolled through the silent auction stuff. Remember all those awesome photos that were there? Those were donated by one of our very own Island photographers, the one, the only, Roselyn Pierce. And come to find out Copper did the printing! The next time you go to Floyd’s Cajun Seafood at Harborwalk look around, That’s more of this duo’s work. That’s some pretty impressive local talent.

Have you checked out the City’s new web site? Looks good. http://www.clearlakeshores-tx.gov/

Aspen is getting closer. I’ll stop by Friday for an update. Word on the street is we’re getting a pizza joint! Yep the building next to Bay Area Glass has pulled permits and I’ve seen some action there the past few days. How about that, Our very own Pizza Joint, I’m stoked, I just hope it’s true!

Have a great weekend Clear Lake Shores!

Tis' the season

Sorry I missed National Hot Dog Day. I hope my oversight didn’t cause anyone to miss out on the parades or other celebrations. It was yesterday. Did you know the Sara Lee Corporation made a 1,996 foot wiener in honor of the 1996 Olympics. It took over 2,000 buns to hold the huge hot dog that wrapped twice around the Georgia Dome field. Who knew? National Mustard Day is the first Saturday in August.

Talked to Vincent the other day, they are close to opening Aspen. All that’s left is to pass a couple of inspections from Jack and he seems positive all is in order. As far as the menu goes his bar manager said they are looking at serving sandwiches and finger food.

The construction is starting on Shore. No, it won’t be widened to the fabric. That’s a debris fence and has to be in place to keep junk from falling in the water. I did hear they are widening Shore a bit though, I just don’t know how much.

TD 4 is spinning up. I know it’s a long way away but if you watch the models most of them point to a path in the Gulf. It’s fun to watch them change daily. It’s peak season and now is the time to get ready.

I see someone took away the table that was up at the community garden. Probably just as well, with no umbrella it’s just too hot.

I got this from neighbor Copper Derry over on Cedar and it sounds awesome. … still pursuing my occupation and passion, Photographic printing.
The digital revolution has changed my industry, but I believe I've kept up with the change.
I have a large format printer, and using pigment base inks and premium papers and canvas, I can print just about anything and any size desired.
I would by very happy to print your "header" photo (or any other you own or have rights to), to any size you desire (resolution allowing) I'm hoping some good word of mouth around the Island might render some small jobs of the many photo's, graphics and sunset pic's, etc….”
I know there are a bunch of you photographers out there looking for something to do with all the fabulous shots you take, here’s an option. You can reach him at copperderrygraphics@comcast.net and as soon as I get his website link I’ll attach it over on the right with the others. Best of all He’s a neighbor!

Looks like July is back

I asked a question of our WCID rep the other night. With all the great rain we have been getting the past week we are still in a drought situation, so my question was "Where do we want it to rain?" Here is an awesome link and absolutely answered my question and lots more. Go here http://www.brazos.org/DroughtStatus.asp

Only eleven weeks away from our second annual Clear Lake Shores BBQ Cookoff!

Stopped by Aspen yesterday. Still no word on a Grand Opening date but I'll keep you posted. Vincent did mention a soft opening coming hopefully soon. I'll let you know. Have a great weekend.

Let it rain

I missed something at the meeting. I know I was there because I saw other people. What was the point the Empenada Lady was making? And what was Mr. Shields talking about? It sounded like a lot of whining from where I was standing. Did anyone in front hear what the complaint was?

This from Neighbor Steph:
In case you need some new info for the blog that does not involve water rationing or farmer's market complaints.
Bay Harbor Methodist Church has 160 kids on a list for school supply needs if anyone would like to adopt a child.  The list is really basic and should run you less than $30.  It is great ministry and is a lot of fun for those who actually miss the days of going to the dime store and picking out your cigar box and fancy new box of crayons with the sharpener built into the box.  They will also gladly accept cash/check donations and the church shoppers will purchase and assemble the supply bags for you.  If you are interested, you can email me at steph.haynes68@gmail.com.  Supplies are due back to church by 7/28, but anyone can leave supplies at my house and I will deliver for you.  Summer will be over before you know it (thankfully), so please help ASAP if you can.
Make checks payable to:   BHUMC   (put school supply in the notes)
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Water, water, everywhere...

Lots of talk about how to get the most out of our water supply during this dry spell. We installed rain barrels two years ago. They are amazing and my trees love the rain water. We are shopping for two more. They are all over the place but the cheapest (my preference) is a place in Pasadena. Found ‘em on Craig’s List. They have different sizes and colors and the price can’t be beat. They have the fancy schmancy ones at the big box store but those don’t fit in to my budget. I will have 4 barrels filled and plumbed for what one of those cost. What we have been playing with this weekend is trapping the condensate from the A/C. We measured it three times and our best guess is we’ll get somewhere between 7 and 12 gallons per day just from it. I have a cooler collecting all that wet goodness and we have a rotation plan for our trees. I was reading where some folks are a little fuzzy on the water restrictions. Just to clarify, restricted water is metered water. Yes that means water from your kitchen. That said some folks are catching excess shower water and some folks are rerouting washing machine and dishwasher water. I poked around a bit looking for “rules” on gray water usage but the water people have them hidden very, very well. If you’re feeling lucky go here www.galvcowcid12.com
The good news is we have rain in the forecast all week so maybe all this will be taken care of by the powers that be. I’ll even go that extra mile and leave my top down.

Speaking of water, I hear that’s been the holdup on the Sandbar. Not sure how that happens but I’ll ask around. We need to get the Sandbar back. I’ll stop by Aspen and get a progress report too.

So who went to the Farmers Market this weekend? I hear the peaches left something to be desired. Hmmph. Check out the City Council agenda below. A couple of vendors, one of them involved in the recent “dustup”  are scheduled to address Council. Could be interesting.

 Enjoy your week!

Happy Friday Clear Lake Shores!

The rumor mill may be in high gear but here’s what I know. The Farmers Market will open as usual. And I hear the peaches are excellent. I love me some peaches. Onward people.

Movie Night is ON! It’s at the pool and if we behave ourselves we might get to do it again. So it’s all on us. See you Saturday for Jaws!
