IslandDrumz

Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

HOT!

A huge shout out to my Father-In-Law! His ebook made the top seller list at Amazon UK in the water sports category!! You can read all about it on his blog Salty John, it's on the right hand side of this blog. Congrats John!

Fourth of July Golf Cart Parade. This years Grande Marshall is Suzanne Hubbard. She makes it look so easy. If you have any questions she is the one to see. Just like it says on the cover of the Islander Line up starts at 10:30 rolls at 11 and ends up back at the park as close to noon as they can. There are trophy's for First and Second place and a First Place for Kids. You must be a Civic Club member to win but not to be in the parade.

WATER WARS V

It seems the evil commander of the Eastern forces has escaped his alien abductors! He has declared his day of retribution to be Thursday, July 4th. But since he has a proctologist appointment he can’t start until 3PM and his mom told him to be home by 7. For a lot of reasons he holds the Westies responsible (he’s simple like that) and has declared Water Wars V ON! For all you newbies out there here are the rules. PLEASE share them with your children!!

No firing from a moving vehicle. That’s right no PICKUPS. I feel stupid just having to say this but there is a reason I have to.

No firing at a moving vehicle. NO. Not everyone wants to play.
No physical contact with the opposition. Unless there is a special invitation (wink).

No water balloons. I know they seem like a good idea but they are not and they leave a god awful mess.

All official parks are hereby designated DMZs. That’s De-Militarized Zone for Larry. That’s right ALL PARKS are safe zones.

No water balloons. If you hit me with a balloon I will hit you with a rock.

When this idea was hatched it was all about squirt guns. Not powered pumps that would make a fire fighter drool. While there is no “rule” about pumps and such keep that thought in mind when you are searching the Grainger catalog for inspiration.

Do I even need to say water only? Clean water only? Nothing you wouldn’t put in your mouth? I hope not…..

If you want to play, identify yourself and your target. Last year we used the three middle fingers ( ALL THREE BUD!) pointing straight up to signal W for west side of Clear Lake Road or the same fingers pointed sideways ∑ letting folks know you represent the East side of the Island. If you blast someone who is not playing you are on your own. Know that some of your neighbors have a very poorly developed sense of humor.

No kids driving carts. It’s problem enough when it’s not WW.  I think the only way to encourage this with adults is to remind them of their cart insurance premiums.  Plus the fact that I'll call the cops AND I will use this blog to rag your ass for a week.

No kids driving carts.  A cart is not a babysitter.  If you don’t have a license, no driving the cart. No holding the steering wheel while mom or dad pushes the pedals.  Run my automobile off the road again because you want to let junior hold onto the wheel while you press the gas and I’m calling your insurance to repair my damages.  Yes it happened – Had the Honda not had ABS, it could have been tragic.

Keep cart speed reasonable.  On a good day, my cart does 14 mph and I’m slow compared to most carts on this island.  You don’t need to put the pedal to the metal – it’s only water for Christ’s sake.

Do we need to remind kids and adults not to play in the middle of the road.  There are a lot of non-combatants just cruising around not watching for people darting out in the middle of the road.

Did I mention NO WATER BALLOONS ? I mean it too. No DANG balloons. Spread the word.
WHEN IN DOUBT JUST STOP!

Whew!

I guess Spring is over.....

Here is a great article from neighbor Jim. As he pointed out, it strikes a little closer to home for us than most just because we are surrounded by water. Add the fact that summer time is in full swing and it becomes a must read for all of us.
http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/family/2013/06/rescuing_drowning_children_how_to_know_when_someone_is_in_trouble_in_the.html

From Dear Abby via neighbor Arlene
President John F. Kennedy proclaimed the ringing of the bells nationwide on Independence Day, July 4, 1963, with the words, "Let's ring freedom bells!" I was a White House special projects aide at the time, and I recall vividly how exciting it was when bells rang throughout the nation.
I'm writing now to ask your help in getting the American people to ring bells again on this Fourth of July, and each Fourth every year from now on.
As a grateful American, I hope to resurrect this proud tradition. Let us tune in with each other and our history by ringing bells at 2 p.m. this July 4 in honor of the 237th anniversary of our independence. Encourage churches and civic buildings with bells to ring them. It doesn't cost any money to do it.
The first groups to support this national effort include baseball teams, the National Cartoonists Society, and the Iron Workers, Firefighters and Sheet Metal Workers unions along with other AFL-CIO affiliates.
As we celebrate our freedom, let us also honor the lives of those who sacrificed theirs for our precious liberty. Your millions of readers can help "let freedom ring."

This could be a fun tradition, What do you think?

Next weeks meeting

WW VI From the Omnipotent Eastern Commander
We will commence kicking Westie Butt at 1500 July 4th 2013. We will have conquered and enslaved the Westie Scum by 1900 hours and will retire in peace. As always, parks are neutral ground AND NO WATER BALOONS
Rules
#1.Safety.... A little civility will go a long way towards safety.  Too bad common sense aint so common anymore. When in doubt, STOP

#2. There will be no firing from a moving vehicle. That’s right no PICKUPS. I feel stupid just having to say this but there is a reason I have to.

#3. There will be no firing at a moving vehicle. NO. Not everyone wants to play.

#4.  No kids driving carts. It’s problem enough when it’s not WW.  I think the only way to encourage this with adults is to remind them of their cart insurance premiums.  Surely everyone knows you’re supposed to have liability insurance on their cart, right? We are supposed to have insurance aren’t we?  I know the $15/mo I pay isn’t going to break me.

#6.   Keep cart speed reasonable.  On a good day, my cart does 14 mph and I’m slow compared to most carts on this island.  You don’t need to put the pedal to the metal – it’s only water for Christ’s sake.

#7.  As a kid, Mom always told me to go outside and play in traffic whenever I was underfoot.  I knew she was only kidding.  We need to remind kids and adults not to play in the middle of the road.  There are a lot of non-combatants just cruising around not watching for people darting out in the middle of the road.

Rambling on

Just got back from a few days in Key West. As much as I miss that blue water, there really is no place like home. It took most of yesterday to recover. A few of our neighbors met up with us and the common recurring theme was "damn it's hot". Temperature wise, here was a few degrees over KW and while there was a breeze there it was just cooking'. We spent most of the time talking about the changes from when we were there last. Too many to list but the majority were for the good. In the meantime we absolutely slammed The Smallest Bar in Key West. No trip to KW is complete without a snorkel trip out to the reef. Our boat went to Sand Key and the lighthouse. It was the first time I've seen Spotted Eagle rays and that made the whole trip worth while. That was my birthday prezzie. Saw a few sharks. No idea what kind, I was more interested in them than they were in me. Once you get over that initial pucker factor they're neat to watch. Maybe next time I'll remember to take a camera. Probably not.

Civic Club meeting is Thursday. Come on out and see whats going on for the 4th Celebration. It's the Clubs annual membership drive and Golf Cart Parade so get ready.

That means WW VI is right around the corner. I understand the Eastern High Commander has summoned yours truly for a press release. More as I get it.

“The plum-colored night sky was shifting to pink to make room for the day, which looked as though it might turn out “glorious and whimsical,” as the Key West Citizen had promised.”

Happy Flag Day!

In 1777 the Second Continental Congress formally adopted the Stars and Stripes.

And a Happy Birthday to our U.S. Army. 1775. My Dad was in the 82nd Airborne. Seems like yesterday…

I got a chance to talk to the Boy Scouts when they were putting up the flags. They still arrange for an “official retiring” of an old US Flag. I was glad to hear since I had a couple in my shop. So there you have it, Now you know how to properly dispose of your old tattered US Flag. Call the Boy Scouts.

WW VI is quickly approaching. There needs to be a change or two so get ready.

Another Hump Day

Looks like the Garage door fund is off to a trot. Thanks Roz for the donation.

And speaking of donations , A great big thanks to the Braggs for  $50 donation to the Movie Night PA system fund. That was most awesome!

A Jack Daniels Fishing Story
I went fishing this morning but after a short time I ran out of worms.
Then I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait.
image

Knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog in his mouth
I grabbed him right behind the head,
took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket.

Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit.
So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth.
image

His eyes rolled back, he went limp.
I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog.

A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot.
There was that same snake with two frogs in his mouth.

We have to do that again!

and I don't want to wait 8 years!
Steak and Sinatra was a hit and a half. We cooked 84 petit sirloins in just over and hour. Amazing. Lots of ideas for next time. Someone mentioned a tux. I'm in for tux. And a cheesy little fedora? Uh-Huh. I made a few trips up the back stairs to see what it looked like in the Clubhouse and it was packed every time. That was perfect. To see so many neighbors sitting and visiting is just awesome. Preliminary numbers from Super Dave says the club made a few hundred bucks to boot. Thanks to all for coming out and making this a great event.

Next up is Movie Night! The pic is Office Space, a great comedy. Please remember to bring some spare change as we will be passing the hat. Thanks.

At the Last Club meeting we decided to have the next meeting on June 27th. That is one week early and moves the date to accommodate July 4th. We will be looking for some volunteers to put together some kid games, shepherd the Golf Cart Parade and arrange for Judges, a couple of weenie cooks and the Scholarship Committee Chair, Amanda Booren will be looking for some help on the Silent Auction.

Something else that came up was having a couple of fund raisers so we can buy a roll up garage style door for the middle bay of the Paul Shelley Pavilion. It would help immensely with keeping the noise down during Jammin and go a long way to  keeping the weather at bay for other events. Thoughts?

This from neighbor Dottie:
Please add this to your IslandDrumz:    A lot of you know Donna Boyd she is a friend of Charlie's, Chuck and Lee knows her well..  They are regulars at sunset even though they live at Waterford town homes. She has colon cancer and VERY little insurance.  What she has is not good. She has only been able to work a couple of hours a day as the chemo has made her VERY sick and weak. There is a big benefit at the Elk's Lodge on Sat. starting at 12:00.  Claudio will play at 12:30 and other bands will follow.  They are selling tickets for a big, nice 43 in. color TV.  There is an auction also for a fishing trip and many other great prizes. Margarita , one of my close friends is heading it and she has worked so hard to raise money for Donna's expenses.  Tickets for the TV are 5.00 each.  The benefit promises to be a fun thing to attend.  Donna is a sweet, deserving person and need help during this time of need. Thanks to Lee who has already purchases tickets.  We can ride our golf carts over to the lodge.  Cut through at the Home Depot to get to the Elk's Lodge. Margarita will be at my house on Wed. evening and we may make sunset.  I can get any of you tickets if you want to drop the money over to me.  Thank YOU! for reading this.
