IslandDrumz

Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

Happy Friday

And farewell to a blustery May. Well ready or not tomorrow is Hurricane season. The weather folks are saying that because there is no El Nino this year we will have a busier than usual season. Huh? I thought a couple of years ago they blamed everything on El Nino. One more on a long list of reasons why I’m not a weather man.
It’s in the same category as the new self driving car. “National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said states should require drivers of prototype self-driving cars to get extra training and special licenses to show they can safely operate the vehicles on public roads.” It’s a SELF DRIVING CAR! Makes my head hurt.

I’m looking forward to Jammin’ tomorrow night. A new band is almost always fun. That last one was awesome so these boys have a tough act to follow.

It has come to my attention that in Tuesday’s post I misspoke. I made the statement “there was an apparent (not to me) conflict with borrowing the Farmer's Market set up.” Come to find out there was no conflict with the Farmer’s Market. For that I stand corrected. Sometimes it’s a lot easier just to avoid the drama. ‘nuff said.

Movie night will show Office Space. Fun starts at 8:30 June 15th.

Anyone spot Lori Dunn’s little girl’s bike?

Did you know squirrels eat tomatoes?

Happy Birthday..

Happy Birthday to my cuz, the right Reverend James F Batchelor of the Lillian Methodist Church in beautiful downtown Lillian Alabama.

Jammin on Jarboe Saturday night! Come on out and see Southbound, they play all sorts of stuff! Country, Rock, and more.

Super Dave is working on Movie Night, Any suggestions? American Graffiti? Casa Blanca? City Slickers? Princess Bride?

Check out the Summer Sailstice Link over on the right hand side of the page. The Mann Clan is putting together a local event and that would be the place to go and sign up. Go to the "find events" tab and search for CLS.  I'm sure Jimmy can answer any questions you may have.

This from Lori :
My daughter Lexi left her black Haro bike at the school yesterday and when we went back today it was gone.  Could you put an email out to the island to keep a look out for it.  It is black Haro with no brakes.

Breaks over.. on your head

I hope everyone had as great a Memorial Day weekend as you wanted. Mine was out of the park awesome. Spent some family time up near Georgetown and a nephew treated me to my first ever 3D TV. I've seen a 3D movie or two and I personally don't care for them. They make me car sick. And then there's the goofy glasses. 3D TV is a whole other deal. It was so far past cool it defies description. Definitely something to check out.

My editor is shaking things up. She says the blog needs a makeover. If you know me you know there is not an artistic bone in me. It's all on her. Let me know what you think. That is if you care. If you don't I'm good with that too. At a quarter million hits, 5000 comments and 554 posts maybe it is time for something different.

We missed out on the 8th annual Drag Race. Did anyone get a take on the event from the new folks in Pete's old place? Wonder if it was on the disclaimer…

Club meeting next Thursday. Come on out, we have a lot to talk about. The partying is about to begin and we need the help. We have a picnic and a golf cart parade to plan. I'll also tell you about the PA System we bought for Movie Night. Yes we did have to get our own, there was an apparent (not to me) conflict with borrowing the Farmer's Market set up. Yeah, I know, I'm probably going to Hell for mentioning the name but right now I really could not care less. Now we have our own, we will be passing the hat at upcoming Movie Nights to offset the cost so please bring some change for the bucket.

Wanted to give a shout out to friend and neighbor Dave for a potential job opportunity. Dave, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you brother. I wish you the best. We will have to find someone to take over Movie Night though. And speaking of Dave, He's chairing Steak and Sinatra Night on June 8th. More to come.

I'm going to post some new links on the right side of the blog. If you have a link you'd like to see on there let me know. I'm looking for a florist to replace the old one if anyone has a suggestion.

Thursday May 23rd

Ready for the first long weekend of summer? Ready for hurricane season? Ready for the 8th annual Drag Race? The answer needs to be yep, I hope so and hellya!

This from neighbor Todd

It's that time again.  Time for your neighbors and friends to dress like a girl!
Sunday, May 26th at Lowell Brown Sunset Park.
The sun sets at 7:44 PM so let's line 'em up at 7:45 PM.
Make sure to get there early, at least by 7:30 for pictures, cat calls, snarky comments about the other contestants and their outfits and make sure you have time to properly "influence" the judges.
Line the ladies up at 7:45p - they will take a lap around the park and then go before the judges one at a time.  THE winner will be chosen by a panel of random judges and then we all go prancing into the night for merriment and drink!  There will be an after-party at 634 Pine.  BYOB
There are basically no rules other than you should try to keep physical contact (public displays of affection included) to a minimum and remember that there will be children at the event so try not to be too nasty... though 'nasty' is a subjective concept and it's open to interpretation.
Everyone is invited whether a CLS resident or not.
This is always a fun event and it brings a big crowd.
If anyone has ideas about how we can capture this energy for a local charity next year we would like to hear them. Contact me at todd_ford@hotmail.com
  Looking forward to it ladies!
This missed the post for a lot of reasons. To all you good folks on Hawthorne and Grove and anyone who else interested, the Roads and Drainage committee is going to try something a little different on your street. At the recomendation of the City Engineer (Brad) those two street will be repaved with concrete instead of asphalt. Want to know more? Contact the R&D folks.
Y'all have a great weekend and take a minute Monday to reflect on why you have the day off.

Meeting Tonight!

An extra special treat tonight!  This from the office...

Can you please put the word out that there will be a small reception tonight after the meeting.  Just cake and soft drinks for the incoming and outgoing Council and Mayor.

Say a little prayer for our family and friends in Oklahoma. They could use it.

Let's hear it for a Day of Rest.

What an awesome weekend! The Garage sale was a screaming hit. I got some space back in my minuscule shop, Went to bed with more money than I woke up with, Got to feed my inner Trekkie and topped it off with an English version of the Three Stooges. Awesome I say! For the first time in 8 years I got to participate in the Garage Sale. That was a ton of fun all by itself. Getting to meet new folks and visit with neighbors is almost always fun. Made some strangers day with great deals on my stuff and watching my son light up more than a few kids eyes selling some of his gently used toys. The little turd still managed to make over $100.
I wouldn't and don't consider myself a trekkie but I will confess to being on the edge. Yes, I seriously considered going to the Wednesday midnight showing of Star Trek with the rest of the Nerd Herd but the old man in me balked at the whole midnight thing. We got there 45 minutes early yesterday which got us close to the front of the line and that was a good thing. All I will tell you is I can't wait to buy the DVD in Blue Ray. MJ and W were extra tickled at the two guys my age they spotted in full Federation Uniforms. I could so be Scottie. Craig's List here I come…

Super Dave and Adelia got Movie Night all put together with help from the (I've been banned from mentioning the name) PA System. Thanks (I've been banned from mentioning the name). The Holy Grail is one of those movies with a cult like following that is almost more entertaining than the movie itself. Even W has seen it more than once at the ripe young age of 12. He had Mel in stitches when we got home reciting, with his best English imitation, some of the more memorable lines of the movie. He sounded remarkably like his Grandmother. The best part was listening to all the others. Neighbors, you need to know there are a few among you who can recite the movie word for word. I won't name any names but his initials are Danny Otto. Great job on Movie Night Dave! You too Adelia.

Something I've been kicking around for quite some time is having a Guest blogger. Still a lot of kinks to work out but it could be fun not to mention interesting. What do y'all think?

Shout out to the folks that donated time, energy and materials to the Parks Dept. Yard sale. They made a couple of bucks for their worthy causes.

I have a huge stack of National Geographic's that need to find a new home. Any teachers out there that could use them as teaching aides? Let me know pronto as they will be headed for the dumpster early next week. Also we have an HP printer/scan/copy/fax machine that is in fine working order but not needed - free to a good home.

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

Heads Up!

This from the Office:

Mayor found a rope necklace and two rings - one gold and one silver - that have the USSSA Baseball Association engraved on them.  And also a big 18" pipe wrench.  He dropped them off this morning.  I am going to give these to PD so if somebody mentions anything they can check with them.

Thank you.

Long before the International Space Station was launched there was Mir. A lot of folks think it was the first Space Station. They would be mistaken. That honor goes to Skylab. Launched by NASA in 1973 it orbited the third planet from the sun for 6 years before burning up in re-entry in 1979.

This from Councilman Booren:
Subject: Hurricane workshop at clubhouse
Will you share with your readers the hurricane workshop that is at the clubhouse Thursday night at 6:30.
Thanks.

The annual Island Wide Garage Sale is almost here. Tomorrow will be the last day to sign up AND still get your star on the map. That’s right an island map is handed out at the front of the island to all potential shoppers. And while it may not have a picture of your house on the map there will be a star placed in the general vicinity directing all those dollars to your door. Don’t wait any longer.

PS if you have one of the CCISD signs in your yard and DON’T want the wire stand, the Civic Club would like to have it for our signs. Feel free to drop it off under my house. Thanks.

PPS. The Parks department will be running the Civic Club table at the Garage Sale. If you have anything you would like to donate to this worthy cause drop it off at the table or run down Ms. Pege or Dennis or any of the Parks committee folks.Dang this color is hard to read.

The first long weekend of summer is nearly here. School is nearly out and everyone will be making plans for that first long get away, Planning the family vacation, long trips to the beach, And the Drag Race!
