IslandDrumz

Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

Ready, Set, ...

So how was your drive in to work this fine Friday AM? Did you get to see any of the balloons? It's BallunarFest Weekend and they usually kick off with a fly-in Friday morning. Lots of variables so it's almost always last minute.
Are you ready to tear off the September page of your calendar? Next week is October ready or not and things are getting busier. The fun starts Sunday at the pumpkin house. I really hope some of you can make it out and lend a hand. I'll be in Shirley's front yard about 3p.

Then there's Jazz Fest in Kemah. It starts Saturday. Read all about it here http://galvestondailynews.com/story/350578

Happy Birthday to my lovely wife and to Ian’s lovely wife Ashly too.

Saw this today being caught on the side of the bridge. Thought it might make a good pic for the blog. Tell your wife Happy Birthday. I had company this weekend so I couldn't make any parties.

Two good ol' boys in a Kentucky trailer park were sitting around talking one afternoon over a cold beer after getting off work. After a while the 1st guy says to the 2nd, " If I was to sneak over to your trailer Saturday and make love to your wife while you was off huntin' and she got pregnant and had a baby, would that make us kin?"
The 2nd guy crooked his head sideways for a minute...scratched his head....
and squinted his eyes thinking real hard about the question.
Finally, he says, "Well, I don't know about kin, but It would make us even."

Enjoy your Saturday!

Thanks to everyone who pitched in and made the 3rd annual Block Party a huge success. That was by far the biggest turnout yet. I hope you had the opportunity to meet some new neighbors because thats what it's all about. Think about that for a minute. Thanks to Pricilla for getting it all off the ground. Larry for the cold beverage and JT for the entertainment.

If you're wondering why Chanel 13 news truck was here last night here's why. http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=8820418
Makes you want to sit up and say HOLY CRAP!

Heads UP! I hear Tina Shelley has been admitted to Mainland Hospital yesterday afternoon. She's in room 329. They suspect West Nile. Keep her and Paul in your prayers.

This definately goes under the Stupid Criminal Tricks. On second thought I'm not sure stupid is the right word.

Farewell

To Endeavour. I got one last glimpse of what has to be one of the most spectacular machines ever built. I hope you got to see it also. It flew right over our little slice of paradise. Wow.

Happy Birthday to Friend and neighbor ShannaMac! 21 at last!!

It’s about to get busy around here. Friday is our third annual Block Party! Come on out and make it your mission to meet at least one new person! Just think, Free Beer! If we can find a volunteer we’ll bring back the duck races for next year. See me or PDuff.
This weekend is the Galveston Island Shrimp Festival. For more go here.
 http://www.yagaspresents.com/shrimpfestival/5k.html
Next weekend is the Ballunar Fest and if you’ve never been you’re missing something way past cool.
The first Tuesday in October is National Night Out and I think we’ll stick with the rolling weenie roast. What do you think?
Saturday the 6th is the Fishing Derby, The BBQ Cook off and Jammin’ on Jarboe. What a way to start a month eh?

I saved the best for last. If you’ve spent any time at all in this area you have seen “The pumpkin house” on 2094. It’s the house in front of the Watergate entrance for you noobs. Every year around this time for as far back as I can remember the owners would get all their decorative pumpkins out of the garage and hang them in one of the many beautiful trees in the front yard. I personally loved ‘em and remember pointing them out to a 4 year old Wyatt in the back seat and hearing him proclaim “They’re Back!” Last year the pumpkins were absent. I was finally put in touch with one Shirley Phillips, and found out the owner was getting up there and just didn’t have the energy to put them all up and then take them down again. I asked if I could help. When I retold this story there were quite a few of you who felt the same as me. That said, The Party will be in her yard at 3 PM on September 30th. I hope we have a crowd and a half to get these punkin’s back in the tree’s where they belong. See you there!

“Life is like a party. You invite a lot of people; some go, some join you, some laugh with you, some didn’t come. But in the end, after the fun, there would be a few who would clean up the mess with you. And most of the time, those were the uninvited ones.”

Aaarrggghhhh!

It's Talk like a Pirate day! Matey. OK, I'm done.

Fairly good meeting last night but the scheduled (or would that be unscheduled?) entertainment was a no show. I did my best to fill in with a slight but passionate rant about the tree "experts" that are hacking up the island in the name of utility lines. Captn Chuck and Tina had a beautiful bald cypress in their front yard straight across the street on Pine. The new folks in the house never saw this coming.

And this from Davey Tree Experts? Looks more like a bunch of minimum wage flunkeys who aren't afraid of falling off a ladder with a chainsaw. I asked the city to please verify some qualifications on these knotheads. I won't hold my breath for an arborist but please for the love of God get at least a supervisor who has a clue. What few trees managed to survive Ike then a drought are tough indeed but can they survive a mob a chainsaws on a stick? Puhleese!

AmeriWaste was there. We should start seeing bills early next month. Recycling will be a tad extra but with options.

Endeavour is on her way and so am I. somewhere between 9 and 10 30 but I'll try to pin that down a bit if I'm not on the road.

Endeavour Update

JSC Special: Endeavour Cleared for Houston Stopover on Wednesday, Sept. 19

After evaluating the weather, managers have decided to clear Space Shuttle Endeavour for a Houston stopover on Wednesday, Sept. 19, with departure for California on Thursday, Sept. 20. Stay tuned to this website for updates regarding Endeavour's stop in Houston:
http://www.nasa.gov/centers/johnson/home/endeavour_visit.html

Endeavour will be available for public viewing Sept. 19 until 9 p.m. Endeavour will depart Ellington at sunrise Sept. 20 to continue on its way to Los Angeles for permanent display.

Today, the SCA/Endeavour combo is planned to fly approximately 1,500 feet above various areas of Houston, Clear Lake and Galveston - including JSC -- between about 9 and 10:30 a.m. as it arrives in Houston from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Endeavour's Landing at Ellington is set for about 10:45 a.m. The specific route and timing of Endeavour's flight will depend on weather and operational constraints.

NASA also will provide updates on Endeavour's cross-country flight via social media using the hashtags #SpotTheShuttle and #OV105. You can follow who sees Endeavour, and post your sighting, in real time at:http://twitter.com/#!/search/%23spottheshuttle

Although it is better to see in person, portions of Endeavour's flyover of JSC and the landing at Ellington will be broadcast live and can be viewed via several methods:

- Tune in to JSC TV channels 2 (analog) and 51-2 (digital)
- Watch JSC IPTV at http://iptv.jsc.nasa.gov/eztv/ on channel 402 (standard definition) and 4512 (HD) - best viewed using Internet Explorer

8. ADJOURNMENT

See you at the meeting!

Ever since I was a child, I've always had a fear of someone under my bed at night. So I went to a shrink and told him 'I've got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy!”;
'Just put yourself in my hands for one year,' said the shrink.
'Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears'.
'How much do you charge?'
'Eighty dollars per visit,' replied the doctor.
'I'll think about it,' I said.
Six months later, I met the doctor on the street.
'Why didn't you come to see me about those fears you were having?' he asked.
'Well, Eighty bucks a visit three times a week for a year is an awful lot of money! A bartender cured me for $10.
I was so happy to have saved all that money that I bought me a new pickup!'
'Is that so!' With a bit of an attitude he said, 'and how,may I ask, did a bartender cure you?'
'He told me to cut the legs off the bed! -

Old yet?

40 years ago, M.A.S.H premiered on CBS. Yes. 40. Years.

What to do, what to do. We have friends and neighbors who are not happy with each other. I have heard rumors and third/fourth party statements but that’s all. I do not know what went down and I will not guess. It’s not so much that I don’t want to know as much as it’s none of my business. When friends are involved there can be no “side” to take. To my friends, I will offer any assistance if I think it will lead to a resolution. I need everyone to take a deep breath and a couple of steps back. I hear some hurtful things said by all and that pains me. I know some things can’t be taken back and that is why I asked the editor to shut down comments for a while. Please, friends work this out one way or the other. It sounds like a very personal issue that needs to be settled by the parties involved and the last thing this fire needs is some disconnected knothead to say something stupid one way or the other. Please, I’m begging you.

The Third annual BLOCK PARTY is ON!! If you missed it it’s a simple gathering with our Lazy Bend neighbors. It will be this Friday from 6 to 9. JT has threatened to bring out his guitar just for us. I’ll bring a table and some snacks, PDuffey will do the same. Bring a chair and some finger foods to share and lets enjoy a beautiful fall evening and meet somebody new!!

Orbiter Endeavour’s fly over has been delayed until tomorrow. This update from neighbor Steve:

Endeavour and the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft are ready to go, but the weather is not. The cold front has slowed and now is not expected to clear Houston in time for a safe arrival Monday at Ellington.

The Ferry Flight Readiness Review was followed by a separate more-detailed weather discussion and the decision was made to delay start of the Ferry at least one day and brief weather again at 10 am Central (11 EDT) Tuesday.

So for safety of the vehicle in transit, the plan now shifts one day with a Houston/Ellington stopover including one night now with departure for California near sunrise Wednesday.

Under this new schedule, the SCA will depart Tuesday for Ellington; Wednesday for Edwards/Dryden with a fueling stop at El Paso’s Biggs AAF.

Club News:

Movie Night is proceeding albeit slowly. I have completed the Exhibition Request and sent it back to our account rep. As soon as we get the licensing in place we’ll pick a date.

I have completed the last of the Federal tax forms for the club to get us squared away with our Tax ID.

Ballunar Fest is next weekend! I’m stoked.

A very tired nurse walks into a bank,
totally exhausted after an 18-hour shift. Preparing to write a check, she
pulls a rectal thermometer out of her purse and tries to write with it. When
she realizes her mistake, she looks at the flabbergasted teller, and without
missing a beat, she says:
"Well, that's great....that's just
great..........some asshole's got my pen!!"
