IslandDrumz

Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

Can you believe it’s the end of May already? You know what that means….Hurricane season starts tomorrow. The Experts predict a “mild” season. I think mild and hurricane don’t belong in the same sentence. And even if it’s a “mild” storm it only takes one doesn’t it. Hell I think Ike was just a li’l ole two and we see how that worked out. For the better actually. We came out the other end stronger. Well get your generators dusted off at any rate. I just got mine back from League City Outdoor Power equipment. I had them prep it and it starts on one pull. Time to stock up on the Spam and then I’ll be ready. Speaking of Spam, anyone still interested in a Spam-bor-ee? A little home town Spam cook off? If I get 5 more entrants we’ll see what we can put together.

Check out these new neighbors.

No movement will be allowed on the Clear Creek Channel during the shuttle move on Clear Lake. During the move boaters may anchor on the north side of the channel at least 500-ft from the channel. The move is expected to take three hours and the barge will dock at the Johnson Space Center NASA Road 1 dock next to the Nassau Bay Hilton hotel between 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

May 29th

I hope everyone had as great a weekend as I did. 4 days in a row is kinda tough though but with a lot of help I managed to make it through. The Harley’s got some TLC, The Jeep got new carpet, spent some quality time in a yard pool, Birthday parties, dock time, and then there was the craziness that was the 7th annual CLS Drag Race. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger. My best guess is right at 200 folks were there to cheer on the 19 contestants. 19. And if you just back from the moon Todd won. Again. Feel free to post a link to your Face book page if you want to share your pictures.

Lets talk about traffic this Friday. Yes it is a big deal. See the note below for what the rest of the lake is doing and note the time the Kemah bridge will be closed.

This from Chief Cook :

Did you take a moment to remember why we have this holiday? Good for you, I knew you would, I still can’t hear Taps without getting choked up. And a missing man formation turns me into a blubbering fool.

Did you get all your voting done? You damn sure better get it done. Remember what happened last time you got lazy? OK I’m done.

Public Safety and Traffic Advisories for "Shuttlebration Weekend"

Seabrook-Kemah Bridge Closure

Read Advisory

On Friday, June 1, 2012 Space Center Houston along with community partners will transport a full-size shuttle replica, the High Fidelity Shuttle Model, via barge into Clear Lake. While the shuttle enters the lake the Seabrook-Kemah Bridge will be closed to all motorists and pedestrians.

The bridge closure will take place sometime between 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. (time is subject to change). It is estimated the bridge will be closed for thirty minutes.

Motorists are advised to find an alternate route while the shuttle is transported under the bridge. Please observe all traffic signs and public safety officials during the closure.

NASA Parkway Lane Closures on Friday, June 1

Read Advisory

Once the shuttle clears the Seabrook-Kemah Bridge it will then continue moving through Clear Lake and dock at the Johnson Space Center NASA Road 1 dock next to the Nassau Bay Hilton hotel between 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Space Center Houston will hold an event in celebration of the shuttle’s arrival beginning at 2:00 p.m. till 10:00 p.m. on Friday, June 1. In the interest of public safety prior to, during and after the event, both the east and westbound right lanes of NASA Pkwy will be closed. The lane closures will occur between Upper Bay Road and Space Center Blvd.

Lane closures will begin at approximately 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 1. After event traffic has subsided the westbound right lane of NASA Pkwy will reopen. The eastbound right lane of NASA Pkwy will remain closed from Lagoon Dr. to Space Center Blvd.

Traffic congestion on NASA Pkwy is expected due to lane closures, increased event traffic and spectators. Police officers and DPS will be directing and monitoring traffic in the area. It is advised that motorists who are not attending the event find an alternate route during this time.

NASA Parkway Lane Closures on Saturday, June 2

Read Advisory

On Saturday, June 2, 2012 the eastbound right lane of NASA Pkwy will be closed between Lagoon Drive and Space Center Blvd. This lane will be closed to ensure the safety of NASA personnel while they prepare the shuttle for ground transport.

Congestion may occur throughout the day, as equipment will be moved in and out of the work zone. Police officers and DPS will direct traffic as needed throughout the day.

In order to keep traffic flowing motorists are advised to observe and obey all traffic signs and public safety officials. Do not stop or slow down to view or take pictures of the shuttle.

NASA Parkway Road Closure on Sunday, June 3

Read Advisory

On Sunday, June 3, 2012 NASA Pkwy between El Camino Real/Egret Bay Blvd. and Space Center Blvd. will be CLOSED beginning at 5:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. All east and westbound lanes will be closed.

The NASA 1 Bypass will be closed to all eastbound traffic during this time. Traffic from I45 will need to find an alternate route.

Emergency vehicles will be given priority access if needed. Proper ID will be required to enter the roadblock. St. John Hospital personnel and visitors are advised to arrive or leave the hospital prior to 5:00 a.m. or after 9:00 a.m.

At 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 3 the traffic signals on NASA Pkwy at St. John Dr., Upper Bay Rd. and Saturn Ln. will be removed. Officers will be directing traffic at each intersection during this time. Traffic signals will be immediately replaced after the shuttle has passed each intersection.

Once the shuttle has been secured and all traffic signals are properly working NASA Pkwy will reopen to motorists.

Please observe and obey all traffic signs and detours during this time frame.

It's Sunday

Today's the day you've been waiting for. Or not. Come early and don't forget you camera. One man's picture is another man's evidence. And neighbor Mike found this in the city's archives. Or was it taped to the bottom of a drawer? Whatever. Who else can see Buzz and John and Chuck and Lowell and.......Have fun men!
Sad news goes here. Even if you didn't know him personally you knew who he was. Rabbit was a constant on our little Island. He would sit on his golf cart over by the boat ramp and watch the boats go by almost daily. Rabbit passed away Friday. He will be missed. Vaya con Dios my friend.

It's the Weekend!

Hot off the wire! There is some cut up Pecan wood on the Oak Street side of Mike Bass’ lots. Craig said it is free to anyone who wants it but it will be hauled off today so hurry up!

We're pretty much set on what we'll do for the Drag Race. We'll be looking for:

Femininity (looks like a girl)

Walkabililty (Runway walk)

Do-ability (self explanatory)

And probably just looking to see who's hot. :-)

Diane and Jennifer have made an awesome sash and I picked up a silver sequined crown for the winner.

From neighbor Suzanne,

Plans are coming together for CLS's record breaking golf cart parade. Keep the ideas coming! The tentative date is Nov. 13th. So far... state and county dignitaries will be invited. Our Mayor and Council will lead along with our City Administrator and city employees’. Previous mayors and council members will be towards the front along with any dignitaries that participate (judges, sheriffs, commissioners, etc.)

Some folks want to decorate their carts to commemorate something historical and some hysterical. Some don't need to be decorated at all.

If you want to get involved, in any way, let me know.

Explorer is on her way!

To all who plan to travel this Memorial Day weekend please look out for the other guy. We all know it’s their fault. Be safe and for the Love of God take 60 seconds out of your weekend to remember why we celebrate. Here’s to all our men and women who serve. Get out there and enjoy your long weekend!

First Tweet?

More like Twitters great, great, great grandpa…. On May 24, 1844, Samuel F.B. Morse transmitted the message, "What hath God wrought!" from Washington to Baltimore as he opened America's first telegraph line.

This is one of those good news bad news stories. Remember Leo from yesterday? The wayward Pomeranian? Frank and Val’s dog. Well he has been found. Seems he was hiding under the bed. Hiding you say? Yep hiding from a butt whoopin’ for pinchin’ a bisquit on the floor. Bad dog.

This just in from neighbor Rob! The date has been set for WW IV and it’s July 4th! Now since that date is the same as the Civic Clubs Golf Cart Parade and Picnic in the park we need to get some rules in place. Watch this space for more.

Space shuttle replica readies for Houston trip

Central Florida News 13
Another space shuttle is preparing to leave the Space Coast forever.
Space shuttle Explorer, the replica that used to be displayed in front of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, will be loaded onto a barge and sent to Houston.
The shuttle replica has been a staple of the Space Coast since its installation in 1993. It was built using the same blueprints that were used to build the space shuttles.
Explorer will be sent to Johnson Space Center's Space Center Houston tourism center.

Day of the Hump

Happy (yesterday) Birthday to
The Space Station. No not the ISS. The first manned Space Station. No not Mir either, Skylab. It was launched in 1973.
In 1934 - In Bienville Parish, LA, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were ambushed and killed by Texas Rangers. The bank robbers were riding in a stolen Ford Deluxe. How many of you ever got to see the car? Remember when they used to have in on tour at the Harris County Fair? Well, technically it was the North Harris County Fair and it was held at the Northline Mall. It was awesome.

Hey speaking of Space ships who has special plans for the Explorer arrival a week from Friday? I want to hear about it. It sounds like there will be traffic issues to be worked out and I’ll pass along anything I hear from Chief Cook.

This from Neighbor Neeltje, Heads UP on North Shore! Sounds like Frank and Val have miss placed Leo. Leo is a Pomeranian and they live right next to Merrimans on North Shore. Keep an eye out for Leo y’all!

Memorial Day Weekend is coming up!
Sunset on Sunday, May 27th is at 8:15 pm.
That sounds like a good time to dress up like girls and race around the park!
Everybody show up a little early (7:00) to prance around, criticize the ''ladies'' behind their
backs and politely compliment them to their pretty faces. Maybe pose for a few pictures and
marvel at how they can walk in THOSE shoes.
At 8:15 pm all contestants for the 7th Annual Clear Lake Shores Drag Race Extravaganza
will be called to the starting line!
Once they're on their marks and their ''get's" are set - THEY'RE OFF!
One lap around Lowell Brown Sunset Park and back to the finish line.
Then one by one they'll go before the judges and this years Clear Lake Shores
DRAG QUEEN will be crowned!
Everyone is welcome to enter. Nothing is for sale, (except maybe a couple of
judges). Nothing is off-limits. (Please keep in mind that there will be plenty of children
and innocent eyes at the event - don't be too nasty....) Special thanks to Ann Reyna for leading the judging committee.
It's a thankless job, but the bribes are good..... ; )
We will post some hints about judging criteria next week.
This is a non-political event and there are plenty of off-island contestants and observers so let's have a good time, keep it clean and remember: we never discuss anything that happens at a party after the drag-race. (Which reminds me - Glen Dowell, do you still have my bra?)

Todd and Bryan

And this just in from head judge Ann Reyna:

We're pretty much set on what we'll do for the Drag Race. We'll be looking for:

Femininity (looks like a girl)

Walkabililty (Runway walk)

And probably just looking to see who's hot. :-)

One more Monday

Did you get a chance to see the eclipse last night? The view from Sundial was fabulous. Jeff Johnson a Lazy Bend neighbor sent me the photo on top. Thanks Jeff!

It’s not even hurricane season yet and number three is spinning up off Mexico’s west coast. I sure hope this isn’t an omen. On the bright side the folks in South Carolina are having a good surfing week.

Everybody see what John and Bettie are up to? Holy Mackerel!! I’d have to pass on that one Bettie.

Memorial Weekend coming right up. That’s right and if you’venever been you need to know to get to Lowell Brown Sundial Park early. That’sall I’m saying. See you there!

Looks like we made $270+ dollars selling off the excess andover $700 total. I heard some folks did very well. Good on ‘em. And you got themessage about the big red dumpsters right? No house hold trash, no electronicsand no hazardous waste. Now you know what to do with crazy auntie Barb’spaisley loveseat you couldn’t sell. Ya gotta love it when a plan comestogether. And yes all the buns went to good homes. Sorry Gene.
