IslandDrumz

Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

End of April

A shout out to all our friends and neighbors who took part in the triathlon in Kemah today. Marcus and Reanna Chernecke and Rick and Jill Mowell that I know of.

For all you early voters out there this is for you.

 5. Early voting in the election by personal appearance shall be for the period permitted by law, which will begin on April 30, 2012 and continue through May 8, 2012. The place at which such early voting shall be conducted is City Hall at 1006 South Shore Drive, Clear Lake Shores, Texas 77565. The hours designated for early voting by personal appearance shall be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on April 30, 2012 and May 1, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on May 2, May 3, May 7 and May 8, and from 8:00 a.m. to Noon on May 4, 2012.

On the ballot are the names of the seven candidates.
In addition is Proposition 1 that calls for reauthorization of the one-quarter percent sales tax for our city streets.

This is an important issue for the City budget and our residents should be aware of the background prior to being faced with it at the ballot box.
Below is a brief explanation of the language and impact to our City and our residents.

Ballot language and explanation of Proposition 1 which will be found on the current ballot for Clear Lake Shores.

“Proposition 1
The reauthorization of the local sales and use tax in the City of Clear Lake Shores, Texas at the rate of one-fourth of one percent to continue providing revenue for maintenance and repair of municipal streets.   For or Against”

Voting for this proposition will continue to provide about $180,000 per year in sales tax revenue to the City to help maintain our streets.
It is not a property tax and does not increase or decrease the property tax that our home owners pay – which is currently zero.

Voting against this proposition will discontinue this important revenue stream to the city.
It must be re-enacted every three years to retain the revenue that we are now collecting.
If you would like more information please contact the mayor, any council member or city staff official.

I don't own the chicken plate but I think I left a stainless serving spoon from the cole slaw I brought. Someone said it was on your bar - if so I will have Dave pick it up. I propose we have a "left this at my house" table at civic club meetings. If the owners don't claim it anyone at the meeting can. Just a thought.

Please consider voting for the Kemah Volunteer Fire Department Fee increase. The wording on the ballot will indicate the ability to raise the rate to a total of $10 per month though we have no plans to set the fee over $7 for the foreseeable future. That will raise your water bill allotment for the Fire Department from $60 per year to $84 per year. The last fee increase was in 2003. Almost 10 years ago!

If you have any questions please check out the information posted on the website at www.kemahfire.com or c all Station 1 at (281) 538-5727.

The Overview and Rationale sheet posted to the website contains a cost and response comparison to a fully paid service in the area. It shows our areas coverage coming at quite a bargain. In addition, any increase in our ability to provide services could provide additional savings on homeowners insurance.

We have already taken some significant measures to decrease our expenditures including Fire Chief Hahn volunteering to cut his salary in half. The Fire Chief is the only paid member in the department. His offer which was accepted this year has not been reflected in the online documentation. Our department is also experiencing excellent growth in membership. In the last year we have recruited several paramedics, a 12 year veteran firefighter from up north, an industrial fire chief as well as a local fire marshal.

Please consider voting for the Kemah Volunteer Fire Department Fee increase. We have a strong and cost effective response. Additionally all expenditures are fully vetted through the Emergency Services Board which is comprised of area residents.

Mark if you want 7 dollars then ask for 7 dollars. It will go to ten quickly enough. I voted for the increase last time, but would like a hard figure for the increase.

Thanks for the comment Dave, i understand your concern. The value is left at a range for a number of reasons and we unfortunately cannot change it now. If you voted for the increase last time it was on the ballot that would be at $15 maximum per month so $10 maximum per month is a bargain (we have no plans to increase the fee beyond $7 per month for the foreseeable future). The previous proposition amount was based on a recommendation by the water board attorney - not the volunteer fire department.

The department is very frugal and saves money where it can however the cost of staying compliant with federal safety and inspection mandates is catching up with us. Hence the need to request an increase after almost 10 years.
You can also see a comparison with a paid service in the documentation on our website. The department listed has a similar response in size of territory and number of calls though their annual budget is $1.9 Million and our fee based revenue is around $360,000.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions or would like more information.

Craig's ignorance does not make him a jerk. My deepest sympathy to Tami. That is a really hard thing to go through.

No I am not a jerk. I had no idea her father died and had every reason to believe they were getting ready for Tuesday night. Tami and Mary, if there is anything my family can do to help let us know. Concerned citizen, if you are going to call me names you know where I live. Either do it to my face or at least have the balls to sign your name.

I think Craig speaks for many people on this island. We may disagree about many things but we are there for each other when things go bad.
