IslandDrumz

Welcome to our little slice of paradise! Clear Lake Shores is probably one of the best kept secrets in the entire Bay Area. Yes we are an island. We are surrounded by Clear Lake, Jarbo Bayou and the Lazy Bend canals. Plug this in to Google Maps and you'll see what I mean 29.32' by 95.01' We are about half way between Galveston Island and the city of Houston and located in north Galveston county. I will try to keep us up on all the goings on that we can walk, boat, bike or drive our golf carts to. Very few things pi$$ me off but one of them is wasting my precious time. I'll try not to waste yours. Enjoy. ab

Happy Go Texan Day!

What a beautiful February day! Except for the damn mosquitoes. If that’s the price we have to pay for this weather I guess I’ll take it. Well, Orbiter Discovery launched on her final mission yesterday. After 24 years in the biz I still not only watch but still get goose bumps watching a launch. I’ll bet I’m no the only one that holds their breath until that 73 second mark is passed either. Neighbor Bruce Harkins had ring side seats for the launch. Rock on Bruce. We got to see Discovery in ’09 courtesy of Shuttle Commander Hobaugh’s son Nick. Shaboom! There are only two launches left so if you’ve never seen one now is the time to plan a vacation on the Space Coast. 1 each for Endeavour and Atlantis. I wonder whats next……
Only 17 days til we roll the clocks forward. That scoots sunset out to 7:20 ish.
We need 3 more folks to donate a $20 for adult beverages at the Jerk-Fest. See Dave or me. Larry and Paul Garner are on board so far.
Concealed Handgun Course on Sunday, Feb 27th at The Arm's Room from 800am to 630pm.
Imagine the ability and RESPONSIBILITY of carrying a loaded handgun on your person as well as over 30 States.
All you need to bring is your UNLOADED handgun, 50 rounds of ammo, drivers license and your payment. The Arm's Room offers gun rental and ammo.
The cost of the course is 100 dollars per person and includes photos, range fees, targets, notary and classroom instruction. You will need to have your fingerprints done electronically. We will go over this more in class. I would recommend filing your CHL application online with DPS, the website is below.

Happy Birthday George Washington

Remember my Ground Hog day question? Here's the answer....from the Houston Chronicle "

What, you might ask, do gators have to do with gardening?
This time of year, everything!
The Puxatony 'hog may know about weather up north, but I'd rather listen to Big Al & the pecans.
Big Al lives at Gator Country near Beaumont. He is:
1. a lot bigger than the Yankee hedgehog (try the largest alligator in captivity at 1,000 lbs) and
2. He has also proven more accurate -- like 100% accurate -- in his "winter's over or not?" predictions, according to owner and gator-rescuer/naturalist, Gary Saurage.
Every year on Groundhog Day, they offer Big Al his most-favorite-food: Kentucky Fried Chicken. Alligators are genetically unable to eat until all danger of winter freezes is past. Their bodies simply cannot digest food until warm weather is assured.
This year, the 'hog got it right, according to Al, who refused to eat. And, as we all know, another Arctic freeze did hit our area afterwards.
Now, however, the gators are out and eating, says Gary. So it's okay for us to plant.
We've also always looked to the pecan trees to tell when winter's over and spring is coming for sure. They don't bud out until all danger of a freeze is past.
Unfortunately the squirrels killed our last remaining pecan tree (stripping off bark to get the hormone the tree produces when it tries to heal the damage). Anyone see any buds on pecans?
So, for all of you who have been asking me if it's okay to plant now, the answer is: I guess so.'
Anyone else have any other predictors to be checked?
Hell, anybody can have a groundhog......
Soup-Cook off on deck!

Jam packed weekend. Started out with a great Farmers Market and even better weather. I got my first sunburn of the season. Some of us went to Glen’s deer lease on a quasi pig hunt. I say quasi  ‘cause who the hell goes hunting wearing corduroy pants. Vwoop, vwoop, vwoop, you ain’t sneakin up on nothin’ with legs. Came home pigless but lots of fun under our collective belts. After 14 years my Jeep finally got dirty. It was Glen’s 1945 Willys in the lead, Todd’s  fancy schmancy Range Rover in the middle and my 97 TJ playin’ in the dirt. That was fun. Especially watching the Rover hike it’s skirt as it tiptoed through the creek. With a button on the inside and the A/C running…. But I’m not jealous……
Island news. Here’s the scoop on the Lazy Bend bridge(s) from P Duffy …” bids will go out in April. The project is not scheduled to start until November (I will believe it when I see it). After it is started, the project will then need 70 days for utility work and they expect 70 some odd working days for completion…”
Thanks for the update P. If anything changes let me know.
Anybody do ice sculpting? A friend of mine is looking for a contact so if you know someone let me know and I’ll pass it along.
Looks like the jerky contest is picking up steam. It was the buzz at sunset. I sent out an email looking for 5 judges. Preferably females who like jerky. Right now we are looking at Sundial park on March 19th. Location can change as weather changes. Simple scoring, no background experience necessary but a set of bresticles will help as you’ll be judges at a jerky off and the adolescent humor is just getting started. That roll’s off the tongue like a bug.

TGIF Definately Topless!

Off today. Hangin' around the Island working on my Jeep. Finally got some of the new carpet in after Ike took the original. We're cooking at the Farmer's Market tomorrow so come on out and stock up on some fresh veggies and stop by for a chat. Going camping / pig huntin' in the morning at Glens ranch. If we get a pig we'll kill it there but butcher it here. Ought to be a show. I hope they don't stink as bad as the gator... I know they're better tasting. The boys are going to get to shoot stuff with their air rifles at last! Thermometer says it's 76. Perfect. I hear the hot tub calling me. See y'all at sunset which is about 6:14. it should be a keeper.

A dog day

Congrats to Hickory. She won the 135th Westminster Dog show. A lot of familiar breeds made it to the top seven. It was almost like a sunny Saturday around here with the Cocker Spaniel (Us), Fox Terrier (CL Road), Portuguese Water Dog (Ian &Ashly), Pekinese (Bart), Sharpei (seen it as a pup but not in a while),  Bearded Collie, and the winner a Scottish Deerhound. That was fun.
Word has it the Island Wide Garage Sale has a date. Mark your calendars, PDAs and smart phones now. Its May 14th with a rain date the 21st. For the newbies we have a garage sale that you register for and it’s advertised in all the local rags. We offer food and drink at a couple of spots around the island and usually have one hell of a crowd. This might be a great time to trot out the first Jammin on Jarboe concert Dennis! Just sayin’……
